Pre-race routine:

I'm kind of doing this as a reminder to myself of what NOT to do...

OK I didn’t really find out about this race til oh about 14 hours before hand. Things went badly on so many levels for this one. I didn’t decide to do the race til about 10 hours before the race. I had over an hour drive over to the race start. I drank a bunch of diet coke so I would stay awake. Chatted with Janice on the way over. My stomach was gurgling and I didn’t feel well. Got there and got signed up. I kept thinking it was a stoopid idea and I was right. So at a race with 1500 participants they had no porta potties. Waited in line at McDonalds to use the restroom. Found Team Terri. Terri and Pete were doing the 5K (and I should have as well) and Jeff ran the first mile with Terri then jogged back to warm up. I just sat around and thought about how bad my stomach felt and how tired I was. Tried to get into the music playing on my iPod.
Saw Pete and Terri finish the 5K. At the start of the 10K met up with the fast people (Jeff and Betsy) Finally met Betsy’s G. It was brutal hot and humid. I just decided to do my 4:1 run:walk thing.

Comments:

Race starts and I do my thing. I’m at the BOP. Did I mention it was HOT? Carried a bottle with NUUN. I used my inhaler before the race and didn‘t need it during the race…good. I used new set of orthotics #2 and no blisters and no foot pain, also good. I was dead slow. I didn’t really start feeling like crap til the turn around. I was dizzy every time I took a walk break. I was SOAKING wet with sweat. Take your technical shirt and throw it in a tub of water. Now put it on..that is what my shirt was like. I would have made Jessica proud. I was a burping and a farting like a champ. Huge stomach cramps. I had to pee the whole race (NO PORTA POTTIES) so I was afraid to drink much. Going over the last bridge I feel this TWANG as my right hammy seemed to have snapped. I finished….about 3 minutes SLOWER than the 12 K I did in March. Not exactly my best moment. I don’t think I have ever been that dehydrated.
What would you do differently?:

drove home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Day after I hurt worse than I did after IMFL. My legs were killing me. I was dehydrated. I was exhausted. I could barely walk. Felt like the worst hangover of your life AND you had been hit by a truck. I’m just crap at this.

I have been trying to loose weight and not eating a whole lot. I ate poorly during the day and made some bad choices that haunted me throughout the race. It was a f-ing SAUNA. I haven’t been sleeping well and the race didn’t start til 12:15 am so I was tired. I am under so much stress and pressure right now with work I can’t even begin to explain it. I feel like all the life has been sucked out of me. I was apprehensive about it on a lot of levels. The only 10Ks I have done have been in olys. They stop timing at 1:30 am which is pushing it for me. I was afraid of being alone on an unfamiliar course in the dark. I was afraid of breaking my ankle.

Event comments:

PPPHHHFFFFTTTTTTTT POO. I did my 12K in March faster than this...not to mention a couple 10Ks in olys. Multiple errors. Only good thing I can say is I did not get blisters and my foot didn't hurt. As for the rest of my body...not so good
