Run
Comments: I went out pretty fast, but I always do this. I felt pretty good, so I kept it going for the full 2 miles. This was probably too fast of pace, but I think the pace on the bike hurt me more than this short run! What would you do differently?: Maybe slow down a little, but it feels good to go fast. Transition 1
Comments: A very bad transition for me. First, my visor gets stuck on my shoe attached to my pedal. So, I have to stop, take it off, back up a little, and then throw it 10 ft or so back to my area. Well, I must have knocked my shoe loose, b/c after I started running again. I hear someone holler SHOE!. I backtrack again and the nice guy hands it to me. But I still had to stop to put on this right shoe. Arghh. I probably lost 10-20 seconds. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to use rubber bands to keep my shoes from dangling. Aaron reminded me of this today. Thanks! Bike
Comments: Well, my Polar S625X stopped working so I didn't have a HR number to pace off of, and my magnet must have slid down my spoke a little like it does sometimes, so I didn't have speed to pace off of. So, I basically just went hard the whole way! I felt pretty good, but I knew I was pushing it. What would you do differently?: SLOW DOWN, and learn to take my own freaking advice. I was just telling the people in my mentor group to "save some gas" for their run. Well, I'm a hypocrite; pure and simple. Why can I give good advice, but not follow it myself. I basically think that even though I'm hammering and my HR is firmly planted near LTHR or above, that I'll somehow magically be able to still run well off the bike. Well that didn't happen... Transition 2
Comments: Nothing eventful. Run
Comments: As with most of my brick runs, I, ironically, feel pretty good the first mile. I think I hit the first mile mark at a little over 7 minutes! I faded very quickly however as I was just simply spent from a hard run and bike before this 10K! I tried to stay cool by pouring water over my head and this helped, but it soaked my shoes which sucked. Basically, this was one of my toughest runs mentally. I think my legs and heart were holding out pretty good, but I seriously lacked the mental strength to maintain a decent pace, and I'd stop and walked for 15-30 seconds! I did this 5-6 times, and I normally never have to walk! I just didn't "feel like" pushing. I was exhausted mentally! What would you do differently?: Treat mental training seriously and find ways to build mental strength. I also haven't been doing much muscular endurance tempo runs that would simulate an effort like today, so I'm really not that surprised that I had difficulty on the 10K. Post race
Warm down: I felt really bad after I finished. I could tell that I was really dehydrated as I felt chilly a couple of times on the 10K. I grabbed probably 6-7 glasses of water and drank them immediately and I poured again as many on my head. Then I just need some space to cool off so I found a shaded picnic area away from the crowds and just sat down for 10 mins or so to cool off. After regaining composure, I chatted with a bunch of BTers which is fun as always. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall, I need to learn how to pace better given the distance of the race. I raced this like a sprint, and I just not fit enough to do that. Also, develop my mental strength so that I can push through rough spots. This wasn't an A race for me, so hopefully I'll be better prepared for Timberman in 7 weeks. Event comments: Overall, a fun race but was disorganized at the start and could have used at least one more aid station on the run course! Last updated: 2007-07-08 12:00 AM
