Pre-race routine:

I made the mistake of eating so much the night before that I wasn't even hungry the next morning. Ate some buttered toast and half an Odwalla bar. Drank some apple juice, loaded up the bikes and took off.

Did this race with my brother, which was so extremely fun. We set up our transitions relatively close to one another and got really good spots. it was open racks, so first come first serve.
Event warmup:

Swam for probably 100 meters or so.
Swim
  • 12m 42s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was really please with this swim because the last open water swim I did the back stroke for probably 90% of it. This time I kept my wits about me and did the crawl the entire time. My main goal was to exit the water with plenty of energy and a low heart rate and I did that.

I do need to work on my navigation skills. I found myself having to make lots of corrections and getting off course quite a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation.
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

The transition area was set up really nicely. My rack was the next to last one, just before the bike exit. My brother and I practiced our transitions the evening before and I believe this helped.
What would you do differently?:

One day, perhaps become accustomed to not wearing socks. And eventually having my shoes on the bike and slipping into them while rolling.

Comments:

My bike time was much slower than I was expecting. I was about 2 mph slower than I should have been and was using my hamstrings way too much. I think this had to do with the fact that I was making adjustments to my bike up to the day before. Hopefully between now and the next race I'll have everything straightened out.
What would you do differently?:

Get my bike adjusted properly before the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

I had a really good T2. This race broke down the rankings off all the times, even the transitions, and I ranked 25th overall and top in the age group. My age group ranking might have had something to do with the fact that the top two guys had no T2 time for some reason. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Be able to leave my shoes cleated in my pedals and jump off the bike bare hoofed.
Run
  • 16m 59s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Even though the terrain was difficult and my legs were tired from overusing the hamstrings on the bike I still felt I had a really good run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with a cold towel around my next. Stretched and talked with other participants.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike set up. It was my own fault, but I know I can ride faster than I did. Overeating the night before didn't seem to be an issue. I was relieved.

Event comments:

I heard several people say they got in to some situations on the bike where they were very uncomfortable because of the lack of volunteers blocking the intersections or directing traffic.

Overall, though, it was a good race. People were nice. Food was good. They couldn't do anything about the rain the night before, so the mud was unavoidable unless they change the course up.

Course: Lake that was used for test drives of Wave Runners, Seados, and various other water craft. Right behind a water craft dealership. Straight shot to first buoy. Turned with the buoy on the right and went back towards the bank we started from. Took a left at the next buoy and another right to the finish line. One thing I liked about this lake was I was able to see the bottom. That way I had a reference point of how fast I was going. The lake was crystal clear. One fun part was also swimming through the lake grass that was floating around.

Course: It mostly followed HWY 565 I think. It started out with a head wind going north. It also started out with decent roads, but that quickly changed too. The course started going against traffic on the feeder road to I-10, and the return was down this same stretch of feeder. I almost got into a gnarly accident on the way back down this feeder. An F-350 with a big trailer was across all the lanes when me and about 3 other guys rounded the corner. I had to slam on my brakes to keep from running into the truck and other cyclists.

Course: Boy howdy this place was a muddy mess. I mentioned the water craft lake already. Well, this was apparently the trails they used to test drive ATV's. The place next door to the water craft dealership was an ATV dealership (Eastside Honda). I ran a good portion of the race with about 2 pounds on mud on the bottom of my shoes. Good grief was that miserable. I talked to one lady who said she even stopped once just to rake the bottom of her shoe off. I constantly felt like I was about to twist my ankle as well. Very uneven terrain. But, at the same time, everyone had to deal with it. So, it was just a matter of who dealt with it the best. Same with the rough roads for the bike. Everyone had to ride the same route.
