Swim
Comments: Wicked fast current. Got way to the outside and was 1000m downrange before I knew it. Be careful if you are that far out. I clanged into a mooring that was on the edge of the course. Also don't stand up too early if it's near low tide. It's realy deep mud. Overall very happy with a near MOP swim on my first time out. What would you do differently?: Sight better and avoid the moorings, but overall very happy. Transition 1
Comments: Kind of a slow transition, but not bad for the first time through it. Fairly long run from swim exit. What would you do differently?: Forget the cylcing gloves and hydrate on the bike, not standing next to it in transition. Bike
Comments: Really strong headwinds on the uphill to the bridge/tolls. Climbs were not good. Once I hit the turnaround and got the downhill/tailwind I passed a bunch of folks and somehow managed to hit near my goal time, but it took a toll. What would you do differently?: I should have hydrated way more on the uphill outward portion. The homeward leg was very fast and I was almost constantly passing so didn't feel comfortable reaching for the seat tube bottle. This really hurt the run. Transition 2
Comments: It didn't feel slow at the time, but in looking at the results it was much slower than average. Took my time making sure my laces were tied correctly and drank in T2. Race plan was to bring a bottle with Nuun on the run, but stupidly changed plan and counted on aid stations. Really dumb decision. What would you do differently?: Maybe try speed laces and bring a bottle with me on the run. Run
Comments: Brutal. Hot, dehydrated and just out of gas. HR shot to 90%+ right out of T2 and could never get it back down. Pressed through the first three miles around 8:15 and just limped home on the back half 10:00+. Actually walked for a few seconds a couple of times. Not fun at all. I tend to have a much higher HR in the heat, but this was really ridiculous. Not brining the bottle from T2 was a major error. What would you do differently?: Hydrate on the bike more and take it a little easier going into T2. Also stick with the race plan and bring the bottle on the run. Post race
Warm down: none. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor execution of hydration/nutrition plan. Didn't get enough hill work in on the bike. Event comments: Very proud to call myself a triathlete. Exceeded my stretch goal time and left everything I had that day out on the course. Made some poor in-race decisions, but overall very happy with the results. Last updated: 2007-07-13 12:00 AM
