Swim
Comments: Swim was clockwise and I kept drifting left. I got knocked pretty good in the left eye at the start but otherwise start was OK. Did not seem to get in good breathing rythym. Started getting passsed by following wave (women) just before 1st turn. 2nd half navigation was better than 1st. Top 3 finishers in AG were all at least 5 minutes faster than me. I competed well on bike and run. What would you do differently?: I had hoped to get down around 1:50 pace so was a little disappointed. I need to get better on swim to compete for podium finishes. Private lessons a possibility. Also need to develop better swim workouts, need more speed work. Transition 1
Comments: 2nd best T1 time in AG, happy with T1 improvements. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Bike went well. Passed quite a few on 1st leg, less on 2nd leg. What would you do differently?: I think I can go harder on bike and still be Ok on the run. If I start using Garmin bike mount my HR data will be more accessible in training and I can do more HR workouts like I do for running. Also considering getting a true tri specific bike. My Specialized Transition Multi Sport is not quite true tri geometry. Transition 2
Comments: Again my T2 time was 2nd in AG. I did have a break that my rack location was closer to bike dismount so when I ran to the end cone in TA, most of run was in running gear rather t han with bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Great run!! Felt like I may get a cramp in left calf at start of run but it went away fairly fast. I got my running legs sooner than previous Oly distance races and fell into a good pace. Picked off a lot of runners. Made good use of downhills and kept steady and strong on uphills. I knew I could go fast at end with long sloping downhill. Pretty early on the last downhill I passed a guy from my wave (M 35+) but as soon as I was past him he sped up and got a couple of strides in front of me. I tried passing him 3 times and he immediately put on a burst of speed to get back in front of me each time. I was thinking we might be racing for a podium finish and I wanted to beat him badly. I decided to draft off of him and pass him again at the end with a strong effort. I was feeling very good and he was breathing hard each time he passed me. With about 250 yards to go I burst past him. Fans were cheering, cow bells were ringing, I thought I had him for good but based on the crowd reaction I thought he might be coming back again. I pushed very hard all the way to finish line. Announcer even got my name right! I ended up beating him by 7 seconds. We shook hands and talked about our fun finish after the race. We were in the same AG, both 50 years old. I was pretty impressed with my 6:45 pace over 5 miles. My last mile must have been in the 6:15 range. Awesome run with a good strategy that ended up working at the finish. What would you do differently?: My best tri run performace yet (based on pace) and this was over 5 miles. Good strategy to get that extra place at the end. I felt sooo good on the run. I seem to run better in my Brooks than my Sauconys, have to remember that for future races. Post race
Warm down: Hydrate, food walked around some. Founf Barb. My rib got sore afterwards but didn't bother me at all during the race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Need to improve swim times the most and some slight improvement on the bike. Run was fantastic! T times were very good as well. Event comments: It took awhile to get to the awards. I did not check my times until after they did the awards for my AG, I was hoping to get a 3rd place finish after edging out a great fellow competitor on the run. My name was not called and then I checked the results and found I was 4th. They didn't have many prize drawings (all from Gear West) but they were great prizes. The used 10 sided dice to determine winners based on race number. 043 never had a chance, maybe next time. Last updated: 2007-07-15 12:00 AM

Went up to Duluth on Sat, stopped at Scott's and drove to site to pick up packet. Actually biked race course at an easy pace, 1 loop of 10.3 M and checked out run route also. In the morning, Honey Nut Cheerios and banana. I made sure I drank pleny of Gatorade Endurance to avoid cramps during swim. Arrived on site about 6:50.
Did a little stretching, ran some and biked some, not much but enough to get warm. Borrowed some of Scott's wind pants. Before swim did a light warmup. Forgot to take pre-swim gel.
