Pre-race routine:

Got up quiet and took a shower (5am). I didn't wake anyone. I ate 12 grain toast with PP, one apple and some milk. Got a coffee at DD and drove 1 hour to the event. I packed everything the night before.
Event warmup:

Not much. 2 minutes of swimming.
Swim
  • 13m 5s
  • 900 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

I only swam twice since last Sept so I wasn't sure how it would go. I did really good on the swim, but I think it took a lot out of me. I swam at about 80% of my ability.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more but not for speed but for conditioning.
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

T1 was slow due to all the gear I needed to ride like gloves, old shoes, camel pack etc. Also, my nike running shirt would not come down from my upper back. It was stuck due to the wetness on my back and it took me about 30 seconds to get it down.
What would you do differently?:

Better shoes, (coming in the mail) water bottle on the bike and a triathlon shirt.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 45s
  • 13 miles
  • 9.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I was very tired and very anarobic for a lot of the ride. I handled the Technical stuff better than most people but I was very tired.
What would you do differently?:

Ride my mountain bike a lot more. I only rode my MT bike 4-5 times in the last few years. Also, I would set my bike up for XC.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

Very tired. This transition went well, but I really hadn't done any brick work so the first mile up hill was rough!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing... Maybe grab a water bottle and run with it. There was only one water station in the trail.
Run
  • 29m 28s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran fast but was hurting the entire time. The last 2 miles I had brutal side stitches. I only stopped once for 30 seconds to walk.

What would you do differently?:

Train specific for this race!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Hold knees and breath like crazy!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of specific training and low lactate threshold.

Xterra is all about racing at almost max heart rate.

Event comments:

I'm now hooked on Xterra. Although the course kicked my butt I still feel like I did well. My bike is an all mountain bike which is ok for XC but about 5-6 pounds too heavy. I'm going to make some upgrades.
Next year I going to train for this event and try to finish in the top 10!
