Pre-race routine:

1st race so I was totally nervous and didn't sleep well. Had a bagel with PB&J around 5:20 and slowly biked to the race. Got everything set up in Transition area and had to clear out by 6:30 but my wave didn't start until 8:30. Put some stuff including extra pair of glasses in a paper bag for my wife to pickup so I wouldn't be standing around for 2 hours unlable to see anything. Had a cliff bar around 6:00 AM and GU gel at 8:15.
Event warmup:

Swam 100 yards 15 minutes before lining up.
Swim
  • 15m 42s
  • 704 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was shooting for 18 minutes so I was really pleased with 15:42. The start was staggard every 3 seconds so crowding wasn't a major problem but it was surprising the first time I hit someone with my hand.
What would you do differently?:

I was really happy with my swim. In the future I would like to get some coaching to refine my stroke becuase I worked out of a book preparing for this race and that is a tough way to improve your stroke.
Transition 1
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

I wore running shoes on bike with pedals that have clips for shoes so this transition was not a problem. It was a huge T area and I was in a corner so it was a long run after the swim to get to the bike but once I got there it went well.
What would you do differently?:

I dropped my swim cap after I was running up the beach and I started to go back for it until I realized "who the hell cares" and turned back around. That probably cost me 5 seconds and I could have gotten into a pile up if someone would have been closer to me.
Bike
  • 53m 28s
  • 15 miles
  • 16.83 mile/hr
Comments:

I had been training with an average speed of 15.5 MPH so I was happy with my speed increase but it sure felt like I was going slow relative to everyone else at the start of the bike. I seemed to actually be going a pretty consistant speed but I think people started slowing down near the end of their races.
What would you do differently?:

I wore my running shoes with pedals that had toe clips on the front for this race. I am considering getting some new pedals with cycling shoes. My feet started to feel a little numb during parts of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

No sweat.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 34s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was tough. Coming into triathlon training the only excercise that I regularly did was running so I thought it would be my strength. Until I saw the race results I thought this had been my worst leg of the race, but it was actually my best. After the first .5 mile I was hurting. I ran through some general discomfort and finally settled in on a pace that I thought was sustainable for the rest of the race. I got into a sprint at the end with a guy finishing the Olympic course that probably shaved 10 seconds off both of our times.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

I walked for a 1.5 miles after the race and then for another 1 mile within an hour. Then I slowly rode my bike home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I wouldn't change anything about the race. For a first race it was awesome.

Event comments:

I am a triathlete!!!
