Pre-race routine:

Up at 4am to get to the race. Had waffles and gatorade. Headed to Tempe and was running a bit late due to construction detours and trouble finding parking.
Event warmup:

Not much, just set out my stuff and stretched a bit and chatted.
Swim
  • 17m 5s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

They called the race wetsuit legal that morning but I didn't have mine. I figured it wouldnt give me much advantage in the sprint. I was in the 2nd wave to start- approx 300 of us. I jumped in and was surprised that 78 degrees felt warm (I don't swim in our pool when it gets below 80!).It was tread water for a few minutes then we were off. I had a really hard time finding any space to swim. I got caught beside this one lady with arms the size of my legs who was just beating on me no matter how much I tried to stay out of her way. Finally, I gave up and let her go ahead- then she immediately flips onto her back and floats, WTH?. I got around her and didn't see her again. We caught up with the end of the first wave, a lot of people were hanging on kayaks and I had to swim around 2 kayaks. I was about half way around the course before I got any clear water to swim in, then I tried to make up time but when I got out the water and checked my watch, I realized my swim had been slow.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Bike
  • 35m 15s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.43 mile/hr
Comments:

The first lap was great, felt nice and cool coming out of the water. Passed quite a few people and was feeling really comfortable on the bike- maybe too comfortable. On the second lap I wanted to speed it up a bit but the course became a lot more crowded, the corners were especially congested.
What would you do differently?:

Go out faster on the bike. I could have really pushed it more the first lap.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

No space for my bike so I had to move some stuff, then got my aero bottle caught on the rack and it fell out.
Run
  • 23m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Right away I felt good on the run. I kept waiting for my legs to feel tired but they didn't, about half way I realized that the run was way too easy and I should have pushed harder on the bike. I passed a lot of people on the run and that felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

I saw Chris and Aaron at the finish and we hung out and waited for the other Cool Kids to finish. Dan, & Woz finished the sprint and then we saw Tanya & Paulette ripping it up on the OLY bike & run course.
There was REALLY good food after this race :)
Came home and relaxed for a couple of hours then had to go play softball-ouch!

Event comments:

I did the same course in May and was 2 minutes faster today. My bike has improved, so I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't ride faster.
I placed 7th in my AG and 21/269 women.
