Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 and got my gear together to take down to transition. Put it all out side my hotel door. Forgot something. Went back in hotel room for 3 minutes. Came out and my equipment was gone!!!!!! What the<>?!!@!@#! After freaking out for about 10 minutes I find my gear at the end of the hall. It seems the security guard had secured it for me. So we had a little laugh when he said he freaked out when the gear disappeared from him.
I then took everything downstairs and there were about a hundred drunks all over the streets. It seemed to be around last call.
I drove down to transtion and set everything up. Without much else freaky happening. Went back to the hotel to change into my race gear and get the family, my mom, wife, 10yr old daughter, 8yr old son, and 9mo old daughter. We ate some breakfast and headed to the race start.
Event warmup:

Took a dump. Ate a powerbar, 2 diet pepsi's (Iknow, I know), a bottle of vitamin water, a bottle of perpetuem, and 3 e-caps
Swim

  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

We jumped in the water and I went from 95 degr4ees to 65 degress in a second. The water feels really cold. We were packed together pretty tight so it was hard to tread. I am happ i wore a wetsuit 'cause it helped me float. I got elbowed in the eye socket before the first turn and had to yank my goggle out of my eye socket. The swim went very smooth. I saw my running partner and my oldest daughter and they followed me down the seawall, cheering me on the whole time. Very cool. I swam either on the rope or the seawall the whole time, so I did not have to sight much.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Overall it went well. I really hate running on the concrete back to transition. It kills my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 05m 32s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.75 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was really fast for me so I had to pay attention to the road pretty close. There was also a lot of blocking going on so I had to weave in and out of traffic more than I wanted to. I was able to drink a full 20oz bottle of perpetuem, a 22oz bottle of vitamin water, and 2.5oz of gel on the bike.

I felt like I was flying and everyone else was going in slow motion. There is so musch blocking on this course it can be frustrating. The pot holes in the road make it even more taxing on the nerves. Again though I felt that it was very fast and flat. There was almost no wind.

My legs felt great the whole bike and I didn't start to feel tired until we were coming into the home stretch.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a PR for me.
Transition 2
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

My running shoes had gotten wet before the race and I had put my sock in my shoes. So when I pulled them out of my shoes, they were soaked. This made it a little difficult to put the socks on. I also had trouble finding the exit to the run.
What would you do differently?:

Practice. I think I lost a minute trying to put on my socks. I still don't have the guts to do 10k without socks.
Run
  • 46m 36s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run. I wish I had a little more to put into this run. I was a bit dehydrated and was having trouble taking water in. I carried my gel flask in hand and took a gel shot at mile 2 and 3. Chased with a little water that I could throw in my mouth. The course description says it is flat, but there is a slow climb after 4.0mi to the end that can wear on you at this point in the race. I did not have it in me to drop the hammer. Oh well.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe a little faster pace. Drop hammer at mile 4.
Post race
Warm down:

Chitchat with family. Soak in the glory. Stand in front of the misting machine. Go get bike from trans and bring it back to the fountain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe the heat a little. It started to get warm.

Event comments:

I love this race. The logistics to get there can be a headache, especially if you are towing two kids and a baby along. My wife rocks!!! It can also get a bit expensive if you are on a budget. However, it only happens once a year and is worth every penny and every minute of training.

Overall felt good. Never was out of breath. I don't think I even sweated. Was felling a little bloated towards the end. I had a lot of food in my belly which I needed to run off. No GI probs. though.
Wind: Little
Course: Up and down LSD. This road is pretty hazardous with a lot of pot holes and cracks in the concrete. There were plenty of damaged bikes out there. There were also a lot of waterbottles on the course.
