Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00, and drove down to the site.. about 1 hour 30 minutes away. Drove with Kate and Amy. So we chatted and the time passed quickly. It's a really easy drive anyway.

Got to transition and Amy got a flat.. helped her change that, then filled the tires for Kate and Amy.. I was the pit crew I guess. :)
Event warmup:

I got in the water and swam about say.. 100 meters out, 100 meters back in.
Swim
  • 29m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Just kept thinking that I was not having the best swim. I felt strong, so that was not an issue, but just about everything else was. Navigation was based completely on the swimmers in front of me as my goggles were completely fogged up. Swim felt just a tad bit long. Probably wasn't. Mentally, I took a big step back by not racing since July 15th.
What would you do differently?:

Race more to keep the edge. I can do better.. much better.
Transition 1
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

a good T1.. nothing to really say other than I thought about my T1 plan in the final moments of the swim. That seemed to pay off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing..
Bike
  • 1h 12m 41s
  • 25.1 miles
  • 20.72 mile/hr
Comments:

well... I marked turns as 'BAD' for a reason. There is a turn prior to entering a park where the turnaround point is, and there is also a water handoff there. Well, the turn looks like it's 90 degrees as you approach it. Problem is, it's not. It's about 60 degrees. Very sharp angle. I took the turn way too fast and flew off the road, probably about 30 feet. When I say flew, i mean it. There was NO avoiding this one. Thankfully there was a large field at that corner and I was able to maintain control and just humbully pedel my way back onto the course. In hindsight it was pretty funny. Glad nobody was coming back, or I would have taken them out big time. I did get a chuckle out of a girl who saw the whole thing.

Rest of the bike was fine. Legs felt some fatigue from IM training.
What would you do differently?:

Assess turns a little better. Probably not go into them at 20 mph when the brake latches are disengaged. (due to brake rubbing on zipp wheel)
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

another good transition. Nothing much to note. Mainly went on instinct.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 48m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run, but slow for me. I can do much better. IM training and cutting back on speed work in order to go long has hurt my speed. I'm not happy about that either.
What would you do differently?:

Speed work, intervals, race more.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted with friends. Watched awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of racing, and IM training with little to no focus on speedwork over the last two months. A bad move. My base is beyond fine. I need to focus on quality over quantity.

Event comments:

I like this race, and all the races done by GA Multisports. Jim Rainy does quality work most of the time. I will do this one again.. and again.. etc.
