Pre-race routine:

Got to the site and set up my area at the rack. Double and triple checked it to make certain I had it set up the way I wanted. Then went to get marked and chipped.
Event warmup:

Didn't do too much today. Really wanted to focus on the swim. Just stretched out and stayed warm since it was a bit cool. Once we got down to the beach, got in the water to get wet and put on the cap and goggles.
Swim
  • 21m 18s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was brutal. There were waves as high as 3 ft. Lots of distance between them but still hard. Took me forever to get to the first buoy and once I did and made the turn, I was no longer into the current and it went much faster.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in this type of chop/curent.
Transition 1
  • 05m 10s
Comments:

I forgot my sun glasses so went back to get them. I'm still too slow in the transition even with that turn around. I need to work on getting the suit off and the shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Put the sunglasses in the helmet.
Bike
  • 37m 34s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Probably my best race pace to date. Almost hit the 20mph pace for the race. Stayed in the tuck on the aero bars almost the entire time. Made a big difference.
What would you do differently?:

Keep up the training and possible try to take drinks while still down. Slowed down a bit when taking drinks. Want to start to get my ave speed above 20mph.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

T2 still pretty good. Fairly quick on the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Still need ot figure out how to get the shoes loos and off quicker.
Run
  • 26m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I surprised myself with this run. I recognized I was going out a bit too fast so slowed it down a bit. Then I saw "the hills". So I kept the same turnover going up both of them and recovered at the top. It seems to have worked. The pace I finished with is probably the fastest 5k pace I've had this year, including just running races. Very happy with the run. Now I'm starting to think I can actually go faster.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly stretch it out down the hills a bit more. I think I reserved it too much and think I possibly could have broken 26 minutes. But I know for next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a bottle of water and walked. Alot. Just to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming ability. This OWS was one of the toughest things I've done. The waves were incredible. I couldn't believe it. I'm so glad I swam in the surf a bit yesterday, but man that was something else.

Event comments:

I will definitely be doing this one again next year if they have a Sprint again, just so I can get to do the swim again and attempt to beat this years time. :)
