Pre-race routine:

Ate a bananna and oatmeal for breakfast and drank a poweraid.
I knew everything was going to be unfamiliar so we got there early and I took my time setting up transition area etc.
Event warmup:

I had some pre-race jitters so I went for a short jog. Did some minimal stretching.

Comments:

The water was very cold from a heavy rain the night before. It took me a while to get acclimated. I had a hard time calming down and just swimming the way I knew how. I turned on my back for a little bit at the beginning till I was more comfortable. The 1st half was much harding than the second. Overall I felt okay about my first open water race swim!

I am investing in some tri shorts. I just pulled my shorts and jersey on over my swimsuit...it was time consuming and not comfortable at all.

This run was very hilly and I was not prepared. I actully walked quite a bit on the uphills.

visit with friends and eventually a cold beer and burger


Event comments:

This was a Great race environment! Lots of volunteers, aid stations and even cold rags on the run. Everyone was so encouraging. I really enjoyed it!

Course: The course was fairly short. There is a really tough, steep hill about 1.5 miles into the ride. Last year on 12 out of 120 people made it up the hill without walking. I made it up about 3/4 of the way with some encourgament from my trainning buddy and then my lungs gave out. Legs feld okay, buy my heart was racing! I felt really good about the rest of my ride. Thinking back, I could have pushed myself more on the flats, but I didn't want to over do it before the run on my first race!
