Run
Comments: The first 10k was great for me. My new garmin 305 forerunner really helped keep me on my pace. The goal for the first 10k was to go out at about 9 to 10min pace. Everybody kept passing me on the run, but I just kept reminding myself that I was running my race and stick to my plan. I did try to pick it up a little bit on the second lap of the run and I did finish up a little stronger and I felt great coming into my transition. My goal coming into the race was to finish the first run in under 60 minutes...goal met. What would you do differently?: Not a lot Transition 1
Comments: Ok, so can you tell I have never practiced a transition? :) I really wasn't trying to go fast. I wanted to take my time and make sure that I didn't forget anything. I actually was doing fine and just as I was getting on my bike at the bike mount line, the announcer says my number and name over the PA and flustered me really bad.. :) What would you do differently?: Need to work on getting these a little faster. I might work on leaving my shoes on my bike during my practice. Bike
Comments: I have trained alot on most of this course and it really helped me out. I know it doesn't show it on my times, but I really felt comfortable on the bike. I passed a number of people and only got passed by 2 - 3 folks. I was trying to stick with getting drinks about every 10 minutes or so, but as I got into the back section of the bike, I started to forget about staying hydrated. On a side note, my sun glasses go so dirty that for the last 8 miles or so, I really struggled to see and almost just threw them away. Again the goal coming into the race was to finish this in under 1hr 30min and that goal was met. What would you do differently?: Not alot, maybe not go out so hard, as I didn't have much left in the tank leaving transition. Transition 2
Comments: I forgot to grab my gel, which I really really needed, though I suspect it wouldn't have made much of a difference. Run
Comments: Ok, this is where the wheels fell off. I have to say that the last 5k run was the worst pain I have ever been in at any time in my life. I had to resort to a run/walk combination. I really didn't feel too bad when I first come into transition. Once I took my first few steps heading out of the transition area I knew I was in for a long 3 miles. I pretty much walked up every hill and then would run once I could. I started to get woozy with about 1.5miles left and I had nothing with me. The goal going into the race was to finish this leg strong enough to just finish the entire race in under 3 hours. I knew that wasn't going to happen and I just tried to finish it up. What would you do differently?: Train more for the longer distances. :) I have really only been training for a sprint tri and when I saw this race was so close to home I thought I would give it a shot! I probably should have done the 5k, 12k 5k race instead as that was closer in total distance to what I am training for. That being said, I had a blast with the race and I am very pleased with my performance. Post race
Warm down: Well I was a bit out of it when I finished. Had to have some help walking around and got alot of liquids into me. My son was great, helping stretch me out and getting me feeling better! What limited your ability to perform faster: Might have gone a little to hard on the bike, but really I did feel good about it. I think I just wasn't physically ready for the distance to be honest. Event comments: I am already considering going the VA next summer to do this race again. This time I will be better prepared! Last updated: 2007-07-22 12:00 AM
