Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Colville the night before the race to pickup my race packet. Well, I was 10 minutes late so there was ‘no way’ I could get my stuff. “Come back tomorrow at 6:00…” Checked in at my motel and fell asleep right away. Got up at 5:30 and headed out to the race. Said ‘Hi’ to racinmason and c_cic. Got my packet, racked my bike and then went for a 2 mile easy run. I then got into my wetsuit and did a short warmup swim, probably less than 200 yards.
Event warmup:

2 mile run and 200 yard swim.
Swim
  • 16m 43s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall, I am happy with the swim. I typically breathe bilaterally but I could never get my heart rate down enough to comfortably breathe bilaterally. Besides from the breathing I felt fine. My sighting was off and ended up swimming the longest stretch of the course in the form of a ‘C’ rather than a straight line. Oh well, this was my second tri ever so I don’t feel I can complain too much. The breathing and sighting will improve with time and experience.
What would you do differently?:

Better sighting and figure out how to control my heart rate a the start of a race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Looking at the race results I can tell that my T1 was really slow. This is something I need to work on.
What would you do differently?:

I don’t know. I put on socks witch I know most don’t do. I need socks or I will be too uncomfortable. Need to talk to the coach about this. I think experience plays a big role so I hope over time this will get better.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 52s
  • 28 miles
  • 23.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Man this was fast. I have never been close to a 23 average before but then I have never been on a course that is down hill most of the way either…

It was a bit discouraging to see people draft. I stayed close with a group of three other athletes. These athletes were all from the same club and they were drafting. They were literally on a pace line. Triathlon is not a team sport people! If you want to draft try competitive road cycling!

Since I don’t consider myself a very fast biker I am very happy with my 14th rank on the bike. Big confidence booster.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

T2 felt alright but again looking at the results I can tell I am slow.
What would you do differently?:

I have tried “speed laces” but they don’t work for me. I don’t feel my shoes are laced tight enough if I don’t use regular laces. Need to consult the coach...
Run
  • 50m 10s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Its always hard to run good coming off the bike and it took me about 1.5 miles to feel alright. My first mile was around 7:45 but I slowly started to increase my speed and got down to 7:20 around mile 3. After that I went back and forth between 7:20 and 7:10. This is a two loop course and shortly after mile 5 is when my race went in the tank.

Rather than directing towards the finish line they sent me on a THIRD loop! I knew I was close to the finish and I kept asking where is the finish line? All I got was just keep running… Eventually someone realized what had happened and told me I had to turn around. Now I was pissed and dropped f-bombs left and right. I lost tons of time running the extra distance. The person directing people to the second loop or the finish line did not pay attention and the course was poorly marked where I needed to make the turn towards the finish.

I passed the guy that finished in 13th place at mile 5 so I know I would have finished at least 13th or better had they not sent me out on a third loop. I was rally upset right after the race but now that I had time to digest the whole thing I feel a bit better.

What would you do differently?:

Not much. The run itself felt good.
Post race
Warm down:

Cussing the volunteer that sent me on a third loop… ;-) Had some water, Gatorade and bagels.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really. I felt I had a good race as far as my performance. Need to work on my transitions.

Event comments:

This is a good and fun race but I doubt that I will do it again next year. The part of the run course that is on grass is terrible. It’s easy to get injured. I was scared to sprain my ankle. It’s easily done on that kind of surface. I think I will try a different Oly next year.

Overall, I had a great time and it was nice to hangout with fellow BT and Blaze members.
