Swim
Comments: I started really well - most athletes were spread out in a line across the start and I was able to swim strongly enough to put myself slightly behind the first group but in front of the main pack. As the swim went on I really started to warm up and had to dial back my effort a little as I could tell that overheating was a real possibility. There was nobody to draft off that was close to me so I just kept sighting and swimming the course as quickly as I could. As I rounded the far buoys, I realized I was dragging three swimmers with me so I guess I was leading the second pack. About 3/4 of the way through, I could feel my HRM let go - one of the arms broke off the rest of the strap so I knew that I would have to take care of that in T1. Finished the swim strong, only 30" slower in a river with current than last weekend in salt water. As I stood up, my right calf cramped and I ended up doing a little dance getting out of the water. What would you do differently?: Probably skip the wetsuit - swim slower but stay cooler. Transition 1
Comments: If it wasn't for trying to get the pieces of my HRM out of my trisuit, I probably would have been 10-15" faster through transition which would have been great. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I started well on the bike and was able to hold a steady pace, despite the cramp in my calf. I got my cadence up and settled into my aerobars for the next 42km. The course is relatively flat but does include some up and downhills, which combined with the wind made some parts of the course pretty fast and some pretty slow. I forgot to take splits but I am pretty sure I negative split the second lap and felt that I was working hard but not too hard on the bike. I used some of the other OD athletes as pace bunnies - only a few went by me but when they did I would keep them in sight for as long as I could. My plan is not to try to beat the cyclists on the bike, but rather to keep them close enough to run them down. The second loop of the bike was really congested as there were long course, olympic, sprint athletes all sharing the course. There were times that I was passing eight to ten people at a time as they were so close together. At the last turnaround, I had some difficult as I came in a little too hot and then locked my back wheel - I turned wide and ended up on the shoulder, having to put my foot down during the turn. Quickly back on track but disappointed that I looked like a rookie on the bike. Came into transition feeling great for the run. What would you do differently?: Better cornering and more time on the bike - still can't ride with the big boys. If I could ride close to my swim and run, I would have been 5th. Transition 2
Comments: Great T2! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: The first lap felt pretty good - I ran down some OD athletes, and had a couple come past. I was able to keep them in striking distance for the first lap and start running them down on the second. Came through the first 5k feeling strong and ready to crank up the pace; however, everytime I tried to run faster I started to feel lightheaded and experienced some tunnel vision. I tried to find a balance between too hard and hard enough but I ended up falling back from the two athletes I was going to run down. Although I had the 7th best run on the day, I think I should have been much closer to a 41:30 10k - however I just didn't have it in me today. What would you do differently?: Run faster - in training and racing. Post race
Warm down: Walked and ate. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat and little speedwork leading up to the race. Event comments: I think they need more shade on the run. Last updated: 2007-07-24 12:00 AM

Did two quick workouts on Saturday morning and then took it easy for most of the rest of the day. Had a nap late in the afternoon and went to bed early. I didn't sleep very well and the alarm came really early at 6. Then I was up, got ready, had breakfast (2 cans of ensure) and headed to the race site to arrive around 6:45. Setup transition, had two cans of flat red bull around 7:30 before starting my warmup.
About a 2 mile run out to the aid station and back - easy going out and some race pace efforts on the return. After that it was a quick 15' on the bike (about 7.5km) including some pickups to race pace. The race briefing was to follow, with the call on whether wetsuits could be worn or not. They said they could but that it was going to be warm. I debated on this, but after seeing most others wearing them, decided I may as well.
