Swim
Comments: Cold water + no wetsuit = ouch. Hard time navigating and getting breathing under control. DI da littel hyperventilating. Swallowed water whenever I looked up to navigate. When I did settle down and get into freestyle I was either catching up to people and running the risk of getting kicked or finding myself heading off course. Low water allowed more wading in and out of water. First swim race for me ever. Now it is out of the way and I can work on getting better. What would you do differently?: More open water swim practice. I usually only breathe out of right side and need to be able to breathe out of left side. Especially since all fo the bouys are on the left. Transition 1
Comments: First time doing a swim to bike transition. Just think how slow I would have been with a wetsuit. I took it kinda easy. Took a little extra time to get my legs under me and to get shoes on and tied. Didn't push it too hard. What would you do differently?: Would be nice to have the quick tie/draw string shoe laces or someday those fancy clip in velcro strap biking shoes. But that will probably be a bit down the line. Bike
Comments: I was on a mountain bike so I had a nice time watching all the road and tri bike people fly past me. However, I did pass several people....all on mountain bikes (maybe a slow road bike or two). Over all the bike was a lot of fun. 18 mph on mountain bike...not bad? I've learned that the bike is definitely my strong point so far. What would you do differently?: ROAD BIKE Transition 2
Comments: I re-tied shoes becasue I thought they might be a little too loose for the run. Lost valuable time. Also, didn't push it too much. Didn't want to start the run out on empty. What would you do differently?: Draw-tight laces might have helped here. Possible newer pair of shoes wouldn't give the sensation of being too loose. Run
Comments: Nice flat sunny course. Made sure to pace myself as I know I am usually no tthe strongest runner. I could maybe have pushed a little harder, but not much. Side ache for a while but not too bad. What would you do differently?: I could use more distance running training. Need to do distances longer than 3 miles. Post race
Warm down: Mostly just stood around and ate several pieces of watermelon while waiting to cheer my wife on to the finish. I wanted to make sure I was right there at the finish line when she came through. Watermelon seemed to be the perfect post race food. I felt pretty famished. Event comments: First full triathlon with swim. Only issue was water temperature and maybe a little wave action on big body of water. Otherwise, really fun and VERY well organized race. All of the volunteers were great!!! Last updated: 2007-07-24 12:00 AM

Up at about 5:30 am. Had a couple pieces of toast with peanut butter for breakfast. Drove to Murphy Park from in-laws house in Sturgeon Bay w/ wife, her cousin, cousin's finacee, and her uncle. Get set up in transition area. I didn't realize how tight they really pack the bikes in.
Mostly took it easy and took in the whole atmosphere being my first tri. jogged a littl b/t transition area and beach. Had to get in the COLD water to get the hyperventilating out of the way. With no wet suit this was critical.
