Swim
Comments: Swim was tough due to head/cross current combined with swells and some whitecaps. Thank God I brought my wetsuit, which is slightly too small for me. It worked pretty well and was a literal lifesaver! What would you do differently?: swim 2-3 times a week up through race ... pool was closed due to maintenance! Transition 1
What would you do differently?: Pretty decent here, should have done the helmet and suit at same time. Would like to get better quality bike shoes that I can wear sockless, with 1 strap opening to the outside. Bike
Comments: Biked fairly hard. The hills really slow me down compared to others, that is where I get passed. Seems if they don't get too far ahead of me, I catch/pass them on the downhill. That tells me I need to shed further pounds! The figure-eight crossing of the bike course was just plain dangerous. I was coming in on this section at well over 20mph and saw bikes crossing in front of me. Luckily encountered a 'break' in the stream when I crossed. My GPS said closer to 11 miles and 20mph average. What would you do differently?: look into getting a tri bike. I like my road bike, but the shifters on the aerobars would be quite nice as I am moving around way too much to shift gears. Plus, messing with the effective geometry on my bike makes it quite twitchy. Transition 2
Comments: Finding the bike lane and dismount for transition was quite tough. Not well marked and communicated. The bike transition lane and running finish lane were WAY too close together to be safe. What would you do differently?: Get feet out of shoes, and dismount while moving, however this transition area really limited this possibility as you had to navigate into a narrow curb opening, after a quick S-curve. Not well planned. Run
Comments: Ouch. Stomach cramping and right-side stinger from the get-go. I couldn't muster much more than a 9:30 pace for the first half the course. 4 of the 5 guys who finished ahead of me in the age-group passed me on the run (man, I need to work on the run speed!!!). I was able to pick it up after the turn around and held off a late charge from someone in my heat. What would you do differently?: eat more easily digestable carbs in the morning ... the raw oatmeal still sat in my stomach for 2+ hours prior to the race. I vomited about 10 minutes after the event. That has never happened to me after a sporting event before. Must work on my running speed in the 5k!!! Post race
Warm down: walked it out for about 10 minutes. Bowed before the porcelain throne. Forgot to stretch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swam only once for the 2 weeks prior (due to pool closure) Didn't get enough bike / run workouts in since last tri, due to week long respitory illness. Event comments: Good cause. Poor road course (crossing of direction, railroad tracks, transition lane was tight) Food was ok. Should have better nutrion value food - less cookies and chips and more vegies and more protein in the sandwiches! Good salad though. Should have a handout bag with marketing and maybe a goodie or two, along with the shirt (don't know the race picture website?) Will attend race again next year. Last updated: 2007-07-25 12:00 AM
