Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45, breakfast of half a bagel, banana and half a Powerbar at 5:00. In the car and en route by 5:10. Set up quickly this time and was ahead of the crowds, which was nice. Forgot my pump.
Event warmup:

Did a quick 100 or so meters in the water, that was it. Next time I need to ride my bike a bit as well.
Swim
  • 17m 52s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim course was so poorly thought out. They squeezed us so close to the shore that the swimmers returning from the "back" leg were crashing head-on into the swimmers from the "out" leg. It was absolutely ridiculous. I must've run into at least 10 oncoming swimmers which forced me to spot almost every stroke. Really slowed things down. poorly planned.
What would you do differently?:

I need to improve my swimming regardless, but I'd like to think my time had something to do with this jack-up course.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Once again, this organizer dropped the ball. Apparently there was an "accident" with the timing wire, so all transition times were lost and lumped into the entire bike time, so no one knows how fast they were in transition, nor do we know what our true MPH average was on the bike. What a joke.
What would you do differently?:

I felt about average in this transition. I'd like to learn to have my shoes on my pedals and go sockless.
Bike
  • 51m 5s
  • 16 miles
  • 18.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Really bummed I don't know my true split. Bike computer said something around 47 minutes with a 20 mph pace, but who knows. Course could've been swept better as well.
What would you do differently?:

Need to build a little more strength in my quads for the climbs. Overall, not much though.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

See above...
What would you do differently?:

Might leave my bag open next time to simply throw everything in there as I take it off.
Run
  • 25m 59s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I was dead by this point, but somehow managed to pull out my fastest 5k time to date. Running under the cover of trees was nice on the backside. Need to work on my breathing technique.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare better for the next race with more sleep and better nutrition.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, ate more than my last race which had me feeling better sooner, and did some stretching. Probably could've stretched more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well, I traveled most of the week prior to this race and arrived home at 8:30 the night before. Didn't sleep well for 3 days prior, ate poorly and drank too much wine. I know better. I'm sure I could shave a few minutes off with just better prep. Too bad business trips have to get in the way!

Event comments:

Poorly organized and thought out course. The swim was horrific, what a terrible idea. The transition area was too narrow and on a sloping hill. The bike course could've been swept better as well. Oh yeah, and the timing gaff was inexcusable.

Course: An odd little course with a little bit of everything. You start out on pavement, then run through a field of rubble piles on crushed limestone, then over a dirt path, onto grass, back onto a dirt path and then back through all of that again. I actually kind of enjoyed it.
