Swim
Comments: As I watched the first 100 wave swimmers, I really got nervous! They were zipping through the water - no problem! Then the second 100 - same story. I was really thinking "I have made a HUGE mistake doing this! Where are my people?" By the mid 300's, I finally spotted one...standing, walking, motioning his arms like he was cutting through the water. Poor guy had to have been 6' plus standing out big time in the 3' deep pool. I then saw another lady, doing my routine of swimming 25-50 meters then taking a rest before restarting...I was going to be fine! I had never shared a lane with someone, and promptly crashed into another swimmer - twice!! Both of us later apologized to each other - probably both our faults. I let faster swimmers pass me at the pool ends, which helped me to not panic that I was in someones way. (Kiley had coached me to think everyone was in MY WAY). The eleven y/o behind me zipped by 1/2 way through! ha BUT I DID IT! Best time at the gym before this event was 13 minutes, so I felt great about today. I ended up next to last in this segment in my age group. What would you do differently?: I MUST be a more confident swimmer to do these events. (Plus I'd rather bike with a stronger group, lower swim number will get me there). I was able to freestyle the first lap then switched to alternating that with side stroke - which lowered my HR. Transition 1
Comments: It was pouring down rain, when I exited the pool. My transition area was the at the furtherist corner away due to my high swim number. I took longer here, as I had to put on wet socks and dump the pond out of my shoes...plus I dried my bike brakes by pumping them before starting out. What would you do differently?: Stop the rain.. Bike
Comments: This was fun! I felt really strong (relieved), but rode cautiously especially on the turns (I was the only one clipping out) and slick roads. For incentive,I would have really liked to ride with stronger riders. I passed everyone who had gone by me in the swim - no one passed me on this event. What would you do differently?: On dry pavement, I could have definately been faster. Transition 2
Comments: Again we had the pond dump out of the shoes... What would you do differently?: I should have thought to turn them over to drain while I biked. OR started out with both pairs upside down in the transition area! Run
Comments: Once I got past the mud, I felt my run was very on target time-wise. Post race
Warm down: Stretched post-race and wiped down/dried off. What limited your ability to perform faster: The weather conditions..and my lack of swimming ability Event comments: Very positive, supportive volunteers who were great leading us the right direction. According to the listings, I ranked #62 of the top 99 females. I do not know how many participants there were overall, but there were numbers into the 500's. Last updated: 2007-07-27 12:00 AM
