Swim
Comments: Surprisingly, the water temp came in as wetsuit legal, so I took advantage. This was perhaps my best open water swim yet. I kept a consistent rhythm and sighted effectively throughout. Kept a nice steady course. Although I take OWS times with a big grain of salt, I did average 1:35/100 yards. Transition 1
Comments: My good transition position really paid off, and all went according to plan. 40/146 overall male, 4/13 AG. Bike
Comments: This is a tough course -- even the top riders in my AG have trouble averaging over 20 mph. I felt strong on the bike, and caught up to enough riders from the earlier waves to make it interesting. Now if they'd only stay to the right!! Pushed hard throughout -- maybe a bit too hard, as the run will show. What would you do differently?: I probably should have drank more consistently, and I let myself get a bit too excited about having a good ride. On the whole, though, I'm pleased at the progress I've made on the bike this year. Transition 2
Comments: A good transition, though the excellent location really helped. 25/146 overall, 2/13 AG Run
Comments: I usually take pride in putting a good run in. Not today. Caught wicked quad cramps on an uphill 1-1/2 miles in, and was held back by that for the rest of the run. Gutted it out pretty well, but I was certainly capable of running at least 5 minutes faster. The woods were extremely hot and humid -- a real torture test! What would you do differently?: I think a lack of fluids and electrolytes and a fast tempo on the bike really cooked me. Post race
Warm down: Totally spent at the end. Sat, then ate and drank, cooled off in the lake. What limited your ability to perform faster: Cramping on the run. Event comments: This is a small local race, not a lot of frills. But a challenging course -- I'll do it again. Last updated: 2007-07-28 12:00 AM

Got up early (5 AM) and had my coffee, toast, peanut butter, and banana. Took off at 5:30 for the race site, since there were no assigned rack slots. This paid off nicely, since I got a primo spot near the exits for the bike and run. Set my stuff up, then puttered around to kill time.
A few warmup strokes in the water before the swim.
