Pre-race routine:

Breakfast - Miniwheats
1hr before race - slice banana bread

Found out the swim was cancelled. I still don't understand why. The waves in the lake were 1-1.5 feet. It was quite calm. I was really disappointed (pissed off). I think this threw me off mentally for the rest of the race.
Event warmup:

10 minute bike ride - Z2, high cadance, easy,
10 minute run - z2 mostly, with a couple of bursts
stretch

It was a very humid day.
Swim
  • 13m 9s
  • 1500 meters
  • 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started way too fast on this run. I couldn't figure out why it felt so rough and my HR was so high until I checked my garmin and realized I was doing <7 minute miles. I know I can't hold that pace. I backed off to a 9 m/mile pace and got my HR under contol. It felt really slow though. Everyone was passing me.
What would you do differently?:

Go a bit easier from the start. Settle into a proper race pace faster. I got caught up in the excitement and tried to stay with the pack.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

My transition was smooth. I am not used to there being so few bikes in the transition area when I get there. I am usually in the FOP for the swim. There were few bikes left when I got there and I felt pressure to really bike hard.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

I felt really good starting the bike. My cornering is getting better as I get used to my new bike. I can't really explain what happened. I felt fine, my HR settled, and I took a drink of Eload from my aerobottle and immediately puked. I mean instantly. I barely got the straw out of my mouth in time. I didn't feel any stomach issues prior to that, but I certainly did after that. I would have given anything for water, but I didn't have any on the bike, only the aerodrink with Eload. That's what I usually carry for races and short training rides. I've never had an issue with it before.

Anyway, I slowed down to lower my HR and try to recover the ability to drink. That took almost 1/2 the bike course before I could drink again. So of course by the end I had only consumed 1/2 my aerobottle. I did not drink enough.

I still managed a good bike split for the day: 1:11. I was happy with that. I took it easy the first 1/2 of the course, and got held up a bit by vehicle traffic as well.
What would you do differently?:

I think I am going to start carrying at least a bit of water with me for races as well as Eload. I don't know if it would haved helped calm my stomach quicker, but I really wanted to try it when I was riding.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I had a bit of trouble racking my bike in this transition. My bike is too tall for most racks. Not only would my seat not come close to fitting under these racks, but they were so low that my brake handles would barely catch them. It took 2 trys to rack the bike here.

The rest of the transition went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down and rack the bike right the first time.
Run
  • 1h 11m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Terrible run. 15 minutes slower than it should have been.
I went into the run knowing I was behind on my hydration. I sweat a lot, and thought I should try to make up what I hadn't taken in. I walked at each aid station, took 2 glasses of water and drank them slowly. I started to feel better, then realized I was drinking too much and could feel the water sloshing around inside. It was too late, I was really hurting. I run/walked the course and got passed by a LOT of people. Definately the worst run I can remember.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do some research on what to do if you find yourself behind on hydration. I had a plan, it got screwed up on the bike. I obviously should have done something different to recover.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and drink water. Stretch a bit.
Talk with Mamamia1 breifly. I might have been rude for not talking with her more. I didn't want to be. I didn't feel like talking at the time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I took 1 month off after my last race. No training of any kind for a month. I had other commitments during that time that made training almost impossible anyways. I might have been able to do a bit if I really wanted, but I doubt I could have got much out of it anyway. July was a busy month. I wanted to do this race to support the local tri.

I was really thrown off mentally today. I couldn't seem to get my mind to really spur my body on. Negative thoughts ruled the day from the time I found out the swim was cancelled and I would have to race the Du. I guess I wasn't ready for that possibility.

Event comments:

Biggest disappointment was cancelling the swim. The lake was calm when they cancelled the swim. They did so because there was a chance the waves might pickup. They didn't. The lake was calm all day. There was no reason to cancel in my opinion. Since I normally race to T2 and try to survive the run, this will definately discourage me from signing up for this race again.
