Pre-race routine:

Did ya ever see that "Seinfeld" episode where Kramer did the AIDS Walk ("Do you see those ladies I got showing? Do they looked scared?!?!?)? Well, it was kinda like that. Went to my parents on Friday night for dinner. We got home after 10 and I put the little guy down by 10:30. Then I got my race stuff together and off to bed. Well, the wife woke me up at 3 and I thought the baby was fussing. Then back to bed. I was up at 5:30, not very rested, but I got dressed and off to the race. At 6:37 I was at I-285 and Powers Ferry when I realized I had left my wallet at home. So I turned around. Got home at 7, ten back out. I FINALLY got to the parking lot at 7:35 and RAN to the start to get my number. Then off to the head and when I got out, the race had started - oops.
Event warmup:

Driving to the race and running the half mile to the start was warm-up enough.

Comments:

I felt pretty good. My strategy was to skip the aid station at mile 2 and walk through the other aid stations. Being this race was on the day of the Georgia-Florida game I have to make this comment. In the first mile I saw this chick wearing a Florida T-shirt that said "We are just better than you" on the back. I passed her wearing my Georgia hat and never saw her again. I guess she wasn't better than me... I also passed a Navy Corpsman and said "OORAH Corpsman!" We Marines love our Corpsmen! I past the aid station at mile 2 and was feeling good through the next two. Right before mile 6 I was feeling tired so I went to the gel and washed it down at the next aid station. I made the turn and was still feeling good.To this point I was on an under 10-minute mile pace. I was on that pace until mile 11 when I bonked! It was all I could do to keep going. The firefighters at mile 12.1 motivated me but I still was dying. I got to the finish and could hear someone coming up on me so I dug for everything I had to not let her pass.
What would you do differently?:

Now, I know you are not supposed to introduce new equipment on race day, but I didn't really train for this one. New equipment for me was 1)a hat 2)a gel I got in my Emerald Pointe race packet and 3)the ole hiking trick of duct tape where blisters develop.
So the results:
The hat: Loved it because after we turned the sun was all in my eyes. I just tipped the bill and took care of the sun.
The gel: Eh. I think I went to it too early. I probably would have know that had I ever used one before.
The tape: Never worked for me on the trail so I'm not entirely sure why I thought it would work here - cuz it didn't.
Post race
Warm down:

I got my T-shirt, a Snickers, and walked the mile back to my car. Then home to watch UGA beat up on Florida :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Having not trained for the at all.

Event comments:

I pretty much just went out and ran this. I thought I did pretty well for having never run more than ten miles and I only did that once.
