Swim
Comments: I started out in the middle/front when the gun went off. I was leary of being run over & caught up in the swarm, but that didn't happen. Girls just aren't that brutal, at least in this type of race. I did bump into a few people and swam neck-n-neck with this girl most of the time, we kept running into each other. She must have beat me out of T1, but I passed her early on in the bike. I did keep drifting to the left, which is odd, because my right side is stronger. The swim felt pretty good, I still did a fair amount of breastroking but it was a combination of sighting, and because there were a lot of people around me. I even passed some people with wetsuits on! The exit was wooden steps onto the pier. What would you do differently?: Pick up the cadence on my stroke. I felt I swam pretty fast, but I'm always conservative to save energy. I've never done a swim/bike brick. I should try one to see how much energy and all out swim would zap from my bike. Maybe I'll try one after a master's swim class this winter. Transition 1
Comments: It was a fairly long run down the pier, which was carpeted, onto the asphault. T1 & T2 were not timed, so I don't know how I did, I just hussled. I didn't dry my feet at all, just put the socks on, shoes, helmet, sunglasses in my shirt pocket. It was still overcast at that point & I didnt want to fog them up. What would you do differently?: Nothing! Bike
Comments: I felt this went pretty good. It took around 1-2 miles to get my heart rate down from the swim and T1. After that I was cruisin. The only time bikers said "on your left" was when I took a turn close to the other lane of traffic and they were passing me in the turn. Other then that, NO WARNING, when you were being passed. There could have been a few dangerous situations if I had moved over to the left for debris or whatnot. It really ticked me off that there were no warnings of passing bikers. I had gatorade & water on my bike. I drank more gatorade then water & about 1/4 of a cliff bar. I had to rinse the salt water out of my mouth with the first swish of water...around 2-3 miles in. What would you do differently?: I had just added a second water bottle holder on my bike and it was a bit difficult to get the water in & out (hence drinking more gatorade), so a little practice doing that before race day would have been nice. Other then that, I think I performed to what my training has been. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went good. My time is lumped in with the bike time though. I still have those fantastic elastic laces on my shoes, so getting into my sneaks is a breeze. What would you do differently?: Nothing, maybe drank some water, but there was a water station around 200 feet into the run. It's so damn hard to drink water while running though... Run
Comments: I felt good in the run. It took around 3/4 to 1 mile to get my HR in control. I started out strong, then backed off a bit. Around the half way point, I started talking with the girl in my AG who had been running with me most of the course. We stayed together till around the last 1/8 mile when I broke away, then sprinted to the end! That was the hardest I've ever come into a finish in any running event. It felt great. It was nice chatting with someone too, though I maybe could have gone faster if I wasn't. It's not necessary to keep a talking pace when racing! I felt like my focus on running in Aug & Sept really helped here, although my race pace wasn't that much faster, I felt a lot better. What would you do differently?: Broken away sooner from my running buddy, I think I could have had a faster pace. Post race
Warm down: I walked around, drank around 3 bottles of water and 2 nut-grain bars, a little bit of a sandwich & an apple. I stayed near the finish to cheer on the other peeps that I knew. Event comments: This is a fantastic course, just enough challenge. There were not nearly enough porta potties and no TP! I was so mad about that. I had to use the bathroom before the race, but the line was rediculous, there was no way that I was able to go and take off on time. Sherox had some potties in the secured transition area, which was nice for just the athletes. The transition area wasn't secured either (from theft) and the RD didn't encourage bikers to say "on your left" when passing, nor did anyone do it. Though the RD and everyone else was very friendly and everything was laid back and safe enough. Last updated: 2007-08-06 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:30. Ate 2 fig newtons and made breakfast/coffee to eat in the car. Got everything packed up and left the house at 6:30. We were meeting some people at the Arby's in Selbyville to drive down together. Ate breakfast around 6:45 in the car. My wave was at 9:06. I worried most of the trip down that I had forgotten my timing chip, only to realize this race didn't have them. I think we arrived around 7:30am, but I'm not sure. I setup my transition area and covered everything with towels because there it was misty out. Waited in a VERY LONG line for the porter potties (no TP either). All the pre-race hydration takes some much needed potty time.
I ate two fig newton's 20 minutes before start time. Did some light stretches and walked to swim-start.
