Pre-race routine:

Got up about 4 a.m. & ate my PB&J toast & coffee. Tried to post on RW masters forum, but the web site was down. Talked to my dad, got my stuff together & took off. It took me approx. 30-45 min. to get to race site. Gate opened at 6 a.m. Cars were lined up to get into the gate. Got transition area set up w/ running shoes, hat & race belt in the back. cycling shoes (open) in the front. Helment & sunglasses open & on bike aero bars. Racked the bike by the bars. Took 2 endurolytes prior to the race start. Went off in search of forum friends. Met Markb from RW masters forum. Had just enough time to say high & wish each other luck. Never could find wrobert from RW tri forum.
Event warmup:

10 min. swim
no other wu in bike or run
Swim
  • 23m 19s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in back right to try to avoid being trampled on. Swim is so new not sure if I would have a good day or bad day. Have very little ows experience. However, many of the women were breastroking or swimming very slow. Didn't do much but tread water to the 1st buoy (about 100 yds.). Almost panicked wondering could I tread water for 880 yds. After hitting, kicking finally found some room & got into position. It turned out that breathing was right on. My feet were on top of the water. And my sightning was great. Actually, was able to touch the buoys as I turned around them. Still got trampled almost the whole way in but somehow swam very relaxed. My goal was 22 min. I did swim all the way in until my fingers hit the dirt. This made a difference.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will def. move towards the front or middle. If I'm going to have to fight & get trampled then I will be towards the front where others can swim over or around me. I think if I had done this could have cut several minutes off the swim. I'm putting below avg. for the swim simply because I did not meet the goal time. However, overall swim & how I felt -including relaxation, sighting, breathing I think was great.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

It was goggles & swim cap off coming out of the swim & shoes, sunglasses & helment on. Grabbed the bike & ran out of transition. My t spot was close to the bike mount line. However, I was a good ways from the lake exit.
What would you do differently?:

I want to learn to do flying mounts & dismounts before next year.
Bike
  • 56m 55s
  • 18.2 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I liked the course very much. It was tough in some spots, but very challenging.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more on the hills. Haven't been practicing on hills but about a month. I would also stand up more on the uphills. That is where I lost a lot of time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Legs were like jello running in w/ bike. My t position on the bike was far away from the running exit transition.
What would you do differently?:

Like I said above want to learn the flying mounts & dismounts before next season.
Run
  • 27m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

I had decided not to watch my hr during the run & just enjoy it. I def. went to easy on the run. The first mile was tough, but my best in time. I slowed, but not stopped for all water stops to get water take a sip & pour the rest on my head. Never got gatorade. 2nd mile just settled in & should have picked up the pace some, but didn't. The 3rd had the trail. Was worried about the instability of the ankle here so was very careful. I also got into a bit of congestion. Alot of walkers that was blocking the ability to pass unless you got off course & on unsafe ground. So basically ran into them & said excuse me. They shouldn't have been walking side by side with their elbows on their hips. Never got into LT avg. pace until the .1 mi. This is def. where I had the capability to do better, but didn't.
What would you do differently?:

speed up the run. Make it uncomfortable.
Post race
Warm down:

Couldn't wait to get a shower & get the toxic water off of me. Other than that eat & visit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swim- shouldn't have been in the back.
bike- other than stand up to climb the hills nothing.
run- too relaxed & didn't push.

Event comments:

The food was not very good. It was mexican which wanted to upset my stomach after being in such intense heat. But other than that the race was great & very well organized. Also the race bag had lots of goodies- a nice duffle bag, NB shorts, technical shirt, tee shirt, wrap - around sunglasses & lots of other items. If they could have made the water clearer & cleaner that is the only other chg. besides the food that could have been done better. It was a great race & I enjoyed it very much.

Wind: Little
Course: Very hilly course. on the way out it was very congested. Had trouble passing. Lot of drafting due to congestion. Some of the hills you would gather speed then have to brake due to a turn so couldn't take full advantage of them. About mile 4 the big hills started coming into play. They were pretty tough, but much of the times able to use momentum off the down hills to go up some of the uphills. I really did like the course. max speed was 33.
