Pre-race routine:

Last race of my first Triathlon season. I got up at 5am, fed the 7 week old, ate a bowl of Cheerio's and was out the door. I packed the car the night before so I didn't have to worry about that at zero dark thirty. One cool side note, I went outside to check the temp before we left and noticed a beautiful scene: a waning crescent moon maybe 10% full and Venus right near each other in the crystal clear, pre-dawn sky. I think Saturn was in that scene too, but don't quote me on that.
Event warmup:

After setting up my transition I swan 100 yards out and back to get used to the water temp. Once that was done it was time for the race briefing and start.
Swim
  • 12m 10s
  • 400 yards
  • 03m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

I halfway felt comfortable during this swim. After my performance at Indian Springs I decided to start at the back of the wave. That worked pretty well until I caught up with the rest of the group and got caught up on slower swimmers. I just need more OWS practice and more races to get used to swimming in groups. I rated this a "Below Average" but for me it was about average.
What would you do differently?:

Stay to the outside more and try to stay away from the pack - easier said then done, I think.
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

Decent transition. The run from the swim to the transition area was pretty far and uphill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 40m 45s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I did pretty well on the bike - for me anyway. I passed more people than passed me, so I'm calling that a success! I didn't drink anywhere near enough. I think I went to the water bottle once, maybe twice. Right after the mile 9 marker some dude passed me, then quit pedaling - what was that!
What would you do differently?:

Lower my handle bars to get into a better aero position. Train more, but I hate riding near my house.
Transition 2
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

I couldn't get my left shoe tied! Oh and I couldn't get my socks on properly. But once I did I was good.
What would you do differently?:

Get those tie-less laces and better socks.
Run
  • 27m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a better time than the 5k time I had last week. I was pretty motivated during the run and was trying to cheer on other runners. The problem is that by the end of the run I was totally dehydrated and my legs were cramping.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a while, ate 2 bananas and a slice of pizza - yum! And I drank a bunch of water. My legs were too cramped to stretch properly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough training.

Event comments:

Well, last Triathlon of 2007 - I'm hooked! This winter I'm planning on strength training more to build my power and loose some more weight. I also hope to finish the ING Atlanta Marathon in March 2008. We'll see how much training I can get in with the new baby. I hope to finish higher in this age group next year.
