Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 to get ready. Rode 2.5 Miles to race site in the dark. Almost rode into a storm drain because I could not see. Got bike checked out because my tube popped out of the blue the night before. We heard a sizzle and my front tire was flat. I put a new tube in but wanted confimation that the pressure was good. I met a fellow BTer. Then met up w/ a friend and Boarded bus to swim start.
Event warmup:

I count my ride to site as warm up.
Swim
  • 1h 01m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 03m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got pulled into a current and got sucked into the bay. I struggled to get out. Finally I got to the first buoy. I wanted to give up and get on the boat but I muscled thru it. My arms got rubbed raw from my wetsuit. I even used Body Glide. I felt like the swim was never going to end and wondered why I did this to my self. It felt so good to touch that ladder and get out. I'm excited that as bad as I did, I was not the last to exit.
What would you do differently?:

Learn the freestyle and swim alot more. Swim toward the buoy to catch the "good" current. Also practice open water swimming.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

After the long dash to transition, it went well. I was so excited to be out of the water. My wetsuit came off easy and I was off on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Event comments:

I did not make the cutoff to start running. So, I was bummed, but I learned alot from this race. I am glad that I did it and did not give up. It was a pretty nice event and I did have fun. I will do it again next year after learing some better swimming techniques. I loved the support that everyone gave to me.

Course: Pretty flat. Some small inclines but nothing really challenging. Maybe because I was in the last bunch, but I did not feel the course was easy to navigate. At one point there was no cones, directors w/flags, or police. I did not know which way to go and made a wrong turn somewhere. I ended up 2+ miles out of my way and had to turn around and go back. I was the last awesome biker on the course. So, when I finally finished after 17 miles, I was glad to be done.
