Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00 a.m. after a decent night's sleep. Had an english muffin and a little coffee. Not much of an appetite. Pretty nervous. Laughed as I walked outside and felt the wind. Pretty normal day in South Dakota!!!
Event warmup:

My husband (Darren) and 3 little girls helped me set up for the race. Thank good ness for Darren and his calming influence. I'm pretty sure I had him check my bike and my transition area about 10 times. Ran into my cousin and another friend who were both participating so visited with them for awhile. Took a little jog around the campground to calm my nerves and to warm up.
Swim
  • 08m 20s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time was better than expected but I was not at all efficient. Some swim training will benefit me greatly! Had problems with my goggles fogging up.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out the goggle problem
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

Not bad for my first one
Bike
  • 44m 12s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Challenging hill almost right out of the transition area. Not much time to get my legs spinning. Did ok on the hill but certainly was glad I had my small ring. Rest of the ride went well although my time was slower than expected.
What would you do differently?:

Better hill conditioning.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Again, not too bad for first tri.
Run
  • 23m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Hamstrings were tight for the first 10 minutes. I then loosened up and felt good. Hit the transition and knew that I was doing pretty well. Took some water and dug in for the last mile and 1/2.
What would you do differently?:

Try to figure out how to make the first 10 minutes more efficient.
Post race
Warm down:

Hugs and kisses from my 3 little girls and husband!!! It was great to hear my girls cheering for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training time prior to race. Not knowing how much energy to expend during each phase of the event.

Event comments:

I had a great time doing this triathlon! I have caught the tri bug and am disappointed that it is the end of the season! Oh well, I am inspired to be even better next year!
