Swim
Comments: I find that I'm veering off slightly to the left when I swim. I was comfortable with my effort level and kept at steady pace, even passing some folks in the last third of the course. What would you do differently?: I need to really pay attention to sighting particularly at the beginning of the swim. Maybe trying to follow some others would help. I'm pretty comfortable swimming in the pack so maybe I need to try to stay there longer. Transition 1
Comments: No time available since I forgot to start my watch. I had some trouble unzipping my suit as the person who zipped me up had put the zipper pull in a wierd position. However, I kept moving as I figured it out and had both arms out by the time I got to my bike. I was a bit dizzy and had trouble standing on one foot to get my socks and shoes on. What would you do differently?: Realizing that I was dizzy I should have just sat down and put on my shoes and socks. It would have been faster. Bike
Comments: I was still a little disoriented at the start of the bike. Within the first km of the course you have to climb a short steep hill and that effort delayed my recovery a bit. But by 10 min in I was okay mentally although my legs still felt heavy. I seemed to be able to gain time on hills (both uphill and downhill) but wasn't as strong as others on the flat sections. I didn't display my speed on my bike computer, I just paid attention to my cadence and tried to keep it high. I was pretty successful at keeping it in the low 90's for most of the race. I'm really trying to work the gears more as I feel the need. What would you do differently?: I was unfamiliar with the course and this hurt me a little bit. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was pretty smooth, the practice is paying off. What would you do differently?: Got one of my laces stuck inside the shoe when I put it on. Need to make sure not to do that again. Run
Comments: The first part of the run was okay. My breathing was a bit crazy but my HR was okay. I did have some trouble (physical and mental) with the hills near the turn around though. As the hills challenged me physically, I felt the old doubts start creeping into my mind. I walked up the short but very steep hill and ran to the next water station. I was breathing really hard at that point so I walked very briefly through the water station and then got going again. From then on I got into a groove and was able to run the rest of the way in. Cathyd passed me on the way in and provided some much needed encouragement. What would you do differently?: Realize that I can recover from a tough patch during the run so I need to stay calm and not get down on myself. Post race
Warm down: Did some walking right after the finish line. Then chatted for a while with Cathyd, so once again I forgot to stretch after a race. :-( What limited your ability to perform faster: Swimming wide on the swim course. Dizziness after the swim in T1. Lack of knowledge of the course. Mental barriers regarding running up hills. Fear of biking on steep downhills. Event comments: I'd definitely do this one next year. I liked all the courses save for that one hill in the park on the run course. ;-) Last updated: 2007-08-20 12:00 AM

Got up at 5:30am. Ate while driving to the race(1 hour drive). From the time I got up, I really didn't feel like racing. It was quite cold when I arrived at the venue which didn't help.
Walked all the paths through the transition area as Jane advised me. I think it helped later on. Got in the water a little early and did some swimming. Just before our wave was to start, a bit great lakes container ship sailed by. We were all a little concerned about how much of a wake it would make but I didn't notice any after the race started.
