Pre-race routine:

I am on vacation with my family in Sea Isle this week and decided to do this race since it was close by in Ocean Sity. I wasn't feeling great on race morning since I have had a chest cold and have been having some lower back pain as well but decided to do the race anyway with 2 friends of mine. Woke up around 5:20am and had a banana and a 1/2 bagel with peanut butter along with some gator ade and water.
Event warmup:

Got to the race site around 6:10am and did not get to warmup or stretch as much as I would have liked to or go to the bathroom since the event was very unorganized which I will explain in more detail later.
Swim
  • 10m 23s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Low Tide created shallow water and walls of walkers which made it difficult to swim. Just an ok swim for me. Would like to get this down to @ 8 minutes for next year.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could do other than start in the front of the pack but I'm not that good of a swimmer yet.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Had a pretty good T1. Spotted my transition area immediately and was able to get my shoes, helmet and glasses on quickly to head out for the bike. Not wearing a shirt or socks has been helpful as well.
What would you do differently?:

Tri bike shoes with 1 strap would be quicker as would a little more hustle on the run through the T1 area.
Bike
  • 29m 34s
  • 10.6 miles
  • 21.51 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike training has been progressing very well. My goal for this race was to average 21+ mph and I was able to accomplish that by hitting 21.5 mph avg so I was very excited.
What would you do differently?:

Still have yet to drink on the bike in a race. Definitely need to work on this as longer distances are scheduled for next season and it will be imperative for me to take in fluids.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

There was no T2 time listed with the official results as it was included in the run time. Felt like I had a good T2 as well as I was in and out very quickly. I estimate it at a max of 1:15.
Run
  • 14m
  • 2 miles
  • 07m  min/mile
Comments:

Had a good run. Felt good coming off the bike even though I pushed it pretty hard. Since it was only a 2 mile run I pushed it on the run as well and came in ahead of my goal here also.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Just continue with the brick training as my times have been improving with each race and legs felt pretty good coming off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt good at the finish and walked around and chatted with friends for a while until results were posted then went back to vacation house.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I cut the bottom of my left foot pretty badly in the T1 area as the sand was full of rocks, shells, ect. Did not feel it until the run and when I finished I noticed my shoe was full of blood. Had to get the cut treated at the site and am continuing to treat it this week.

Event comments:

This was only my 3rd Tri and I feel like my training is paying off as I am continuing to improve my times and place higher. I finished 50th out of 259 or top 19% and 5th out of 24 in my age group. My final race of this season is a sprint in LBI and I am looking forward to the challenge of putting up my best times yet.

As fars as this race was concerned the event was very unorganized. The race website posted incorrect directions to the site and there were extremely long registration lines which caused a late start. 2 different start times were posted as well as 2 different run distances and the run was supposed to go over the closed route 9 bridge but did not. Also, the bike segment was 1.5 miles short. I tried to e-mail CityTri pre and post race with questions regarding the race but have had no response. It was fun to get a race in prior to the start of my vacation but I would not do this race again.
