Pre-race routine:

The day before the race I drove the 5.5 hrs from St Louis to my parent's place at Lake Geneva. I took advantage of the long drive to pre-hydrate, drinking just about an entire giant thing of gatorade over the course of the drive (more preload equals higher cardiac output for any given heart rate!) unfortunately it meant I was stopping every ~1.5 hrs to pee! Lucky enough, I got off work early in the day and was able to get up to WI in time to pick up my packet and still have enough daylight to ride the bike course. I rode it in 50 minutes to wake my legs up from the long ride and it's always nice to learn the corners and the hills and figure out how best to dose the effort on race day. That night I hung out with the folks, ate a nice big steak, and tuned up the bike.
Event warmup:

Got up at around 4. Ate some bananas, continued my pre-hydrating from the day before, and got some eggs in me (mmm, protein). I went to the course early and got a good position in the giant transition area. Then I just hung out. I don't stretch, it's pointless, ask any physical therapist worth their salt.
Swim
  • 08m 32s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was clearly a very weak leg for me. Coming out of the water I felt like I had done a good job staying within myself and had plenty of energy for the bike, but that's obviously because I didn't go fast enough! Glancing through the rankings I think I was one of the 3 or 4 slowest people in the top 50. I attribute that to three things. #1 I'm not a very fast swimmer to start with. #2 I've never done open water before and in the first 200m got WAY off course and had to angle myself back towards the group. #3 During the last race (my first tri) I felt like I went too hard in the swim and went into T1 with my HR red-lined, so I tried to take it easier this race and may have taken it TOO easy
What would you do differently?:

Train more speed and less distance, sight better, go harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Found my bike easily enough, got suited up pretty quickly. I suppose this would go faster if I had fancy tri shoes that I could slip on on the bike...but I've bought so many other new toys recently...
What would you do differently?:

maybe get some tri shoes eventually
Bike

Comments:

I'm glad I rode the course the night before. It was good to know the turns (not all of them were that clear) and where the rolling sections were. Overall I felt like I killed the bike leg. Felt real strong the whole ride, dosed my effort well and came off the bike still feeling fresh, plus I passed my fair share of people with expensive tri bikes and crazy aero faring helmets...always fun.
What would you do differently?:

Well you can always go a LITTLE faster, but I was pretty happy with my ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

When I got back to T2 almost no one was back from the bike and I got a little lost trying to find my stuff. I probably only lost 30-45s but it felt like an eternity saying "third row back, near the little tree" over and over and over in my head. Other than that it takes me a little while to get my socks on and tie my shoes, but the run is so much more comfortable when I take a second to do that.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe do a little something to mark my stop in the transition area.
Run
  • 23m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

As always first 0.5 miles I felt like hell and then slowly started to get my legs under me and find a rhythm. The hill was very steep and that was challenging--quads cramp a bit on the way up and then hamstrings cramp trying to run down it. I tried to train hills in preparation but we don't have anything around here quite that steep.

While not quite as disastrous as my swim, my run time is still pretty weak in comparison to the bike and definitely something to work on.
What would you do differently?:

I think I need to do more brick workouts and maybe some interval training to work on speed
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and snacks, talked the race over with the folks (nice to see them at the finish) and changed into some street clothes before the awards ceremony (what's with everyone walking around in sweaty race gear hours after they finish???)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've raced bikes for years but only just started training on the swim and run, so I just need to work on those two and try to get faster.

Event comments:

The guy making announcements was a bit of a fool (enough with the cowbell, don't ring it while you're talking!) and didn't run the awards ceremony very well. But overall it was fairly well organized. They just need to not change the swim course on us 30 times, mark the bike course better, put a water station at the top of that hill, and give someone else the microphone.
