Total Time = 2h 12m 39s
Overall Rank = 10/
Age Group = Collegiate
Age Group Rank = 1/22
Pre-race routine:

0400:
woke up, had 2-3 small cups of coffee and 1 packet plain + 1 packet Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal.

0425:
rode bike and gear to CRC to meet carpool

0600:
arrived, used restroom, checked in, set-up transition area
Event warmup:

none really
Swim
  • 24m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

very warm water, had trouble w/ timing chip coming loose
the drag was fairly noticable, and I "stopped" twice to try and fix it

course must've been long, because I was seeded with the slowest swim time (from my first open water 1500m swim at Collegiate Nationals 2007), but I was 2nd out of the water with this time that I would consider slow for a 1500m
What would you do differently?:

check timing chip fit before the race
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

T1 went fairly smooth, pre-cut GU packets were a little messy
What would you do differently?:

Wipe feet off better before stepping into Tri-shoes! My feet got cut up a little by small rocks
Bike
  • 1h 09m 13s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Great test ride for my new bike! Fell over when I lost two much speed when my chain fell off.

Tried taping an open packet of HammerGel to my top-tube. 1/3 of it shot onto the aerobars when I tried to pull it off 1/2 way into the ride.
What would you do differently?:

As soon as my chain falls off and my first attempt to shift gears to pick it up doesn't work, either lift the chain with fingers, or stop and dismount. I slowed down too much this time and fell on my hip.

Install seat-tube water bottle cage, and practice pulling bottle from behind-seat cages.

Use velcro tape to attach a HammerGel flask to bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Went fast considering that I had to tie my laces
What would you do differently?:

Try lock-laces
Run
  • 36m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 05m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run, stomach issues kept me from picking up the pace sharply in the last 2 miles, but they didn't cause me to slow down. Still finished with a sprint, although it was short because I didn't see the finish line until I was almost across it.
What would you do differently?:

practice drinking from cups on the move
Post race
Warm down:

HIT THE FOOD TABLE, drank, used bathroom, repeat several times

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike handling capabilities around corners and turns, not enough training on the bike to know how hard I can push myself on the bike without "dying" before the end of the race

Event comments:

Fun race, loved the new bike!
