Pre-race routine:

I will start off by saying that I attended a wedding the night before, which isn't exactly the kind of thing you want to do the night before a race, but what could I do?
Woke up at 5:45, raced around the house trying to find my bib number and chip since I didn't get a chance to get organized last night, then I realize that my favorite running clothes are in the dirty laundry basket because I haven't done laundry in a week. Great. Find alternate clothes, eat a Mojo bar because I don't feel like driving 2 miles to Dunkin for a bagel, leave the house at 6:30. I get to Hartford and I have no idea where to park because the course has been changed and it seems that all the garages and lots are on roads that will be closed to traffic once the race starts. Finally pick a garage where there are lots of marathon-looking people parking. They must know something I don't otherwise we are all going to be stuck.
Event warmup:

Walked around the park for a few to loosen up, called Pam and met up with her and Dave. The porto lines are a mile long so we opt for Starbucks and I end up in the men's room. There is TP so I can't complain. Then we walk back to the park, strip, find Kelly, and join the pack waiting to start the race. By now I already have to pee again.

Comments:

Right from the start I had to pee even though I'd gone 5 minutes before. Once I crossed the bridge into E. Hartford I started thinking about my options. There were already lines at the portos and all the good bushes were taken so I decided to hold it, but then, at the top of my very favorite lunch-time-run hill, I noticed a row of portos down the embankment in Riverside Park, no lines. PERFECT. I had to run off course but I think I only lost a minute and a half, maybe less. Soooo glad I did that.
My mile splits were ALL over the place. I missed the first mile marker so I didn't know how fast I was going until the 2nd mile, and I thought I was going a little fast, but decided to take a chance and go faster than I was planning. I felt great for about 11 miles and ran some pretty fast miles in there. HR was out of my aerobic zone but not crazy so I didn't slow down. The last 2 miles were pretty tough. I was hurting but I wanted to beat 2:05 so I kept the pace up. My HR in the last 1.2 miles was in the 190's. I was pushing it! I beat my goal by 10 minutes so no complaints here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Found Pam and Dave (many thanks to Dave for holding my stuff and cheering for me out on the course!) and Pam and I basked in our glory ;). Then it was off to the porto and then home. I wish I'd gotten a massage, but when I got home today there was a coupon in the mail from my gym offering me 15% off a massage there. Nice timing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing

Event comments:

HMF puts on a good race, and I wasn't disappointed with anything. The new course was really nice and had plenty of aid stations and volunteers. I saw parts of Hartford that I've never seen before (and may never see again) and I thought it was just challenging enough.
