Pre-race routine:

Drove 10 hours from Virginia Beach on Tudsdat needed a short run to stretch the legs. Wednesday 1000 meter swim at the Y on 2nd, 30 minute run in a hilly park, then easy ride on bike trail adjacent to river. Thursday drove the course, parked at church at 42 and 1649, rode the out and back along 1649 then up 42 to 393 and back. Friday went to the swim practice 20 minutes easy pace. Went to Louisville Slugger Museum after Athelete Meeting, sat around hotel room watching my favortie movie Field of Dreams. Went to Banquet, fun came back started setting up bike rode around hotel parking lot and found I had a broken seat rail. Picked up new seat Saturday morning, then did 10 minute swim, 20 minute ride and 10 minute run.
Event warmup:

I have to give a special thank you and shout to Brian Shea of Personal Best Nutrition. I had ordered a can of Accelerade and a can of Champion Nutrition Met Endurace, but the order got delayed in shipping. They had a problem getting the Met Endurance from Champion Nutrition, Brian Dug into his own personal stash and personally mailed it to my hotel. THANK YOU BRIAN you are great.

Up at 3:45 cup of coffee hot shower to stretch. One eight ounce Vanilla Ensure, one serving of Met Endurance, one personally banana six ice cubes. Wheat bread with Peanut Butter. Sipped water and Gatorade, had another Ensure at 6:00, Apple Cinamon Carbboom at 6:50

Comments:

The time trial start was fun, I was dreading starting a swim with 2200 good friends. Had a great swim was about eight minutes faster than goal but not once did I feel I was working too hard. Only mistake was at the first turn buoy once we got into the channel. Tried taking it tight but there was a big line of people did a weird frog kick and got a cramp in my left calf, (More to come on this). Felt strong the whole way actually passed people (not usual). Got out got a kiss from my beautiful wife and daughter
What would you do differently?:

Swing wide on turn buoys

I lost some weight since the time I bought my Tri Club jersey and it fit a little loose. Had some problem getting left arm into sleeve whole.

Comments:

Challenging course for someone who has to drive to find hills. Rode very comfortably the whole time. Sipped water only for first 20 minutes, then had one Apple Cinnamon Carbboom and 8 ounces of Pepsi after that I consumed my Ironman Cocktail of two scoops of Accelerade Orange, two scoops of Met Endurance and three scoops of Carbopro every 20 minutes, I also took two Endurolytes every hour. Had some stoner dude offer me a hit off his joint right before the one lane bridge. I knew I was drinking good cause I had to stand up and pee around mile 30. The Legrange Ironman Festival People were great. My daughter said after the race said it felt like she was at the Tour de France, and this is what it felt like for me as well. At the end of the festival people someone decorated a dead racoon with a hat and streamers cracked me up. Started coasting down hills after Legrange. At special needs I had a Smuckers Peanut Butter and Honey Uncrustable washed down with 8 ounces of Pepsi, that hit the spot. Someone forgot to warn the skunks about the race got a big wiff at mile 94 and 100. I felt strong the entire ride, maintained an even pace and actually went a mile an hour faster the last 37 mile segment.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more hills

Comments:

Felt great the first 4-6 miles, but then that calf cramp from the swim came back on me. Felt it the whole run, really slowed me down. First two aid stations I ran through at easy pace, next three ran to aid station walked through and then started running. Then the agony began by the end of the ru it was 200 meters of walking 200 meters of running. Drank lots of water, watered down the Gatorade, sipped coke started the chicken broth at the second turn around. Finished real strong what a feeling, got many high fives crossed the finish line with my daughter.
What would you do differently?:

More run miles in training
Post race
Warm down:

Message from dude with plummers hands. 5 slices of Pizza, 2 White Castle hamburgers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run mileage, cramp

Event comments:

the only complaint was that we had to buy our Finishers Tee Shirt, thought we should have gotten that as we crossed the finish line.
