5:00 ate wheat bagel + peanut butter

Talked
Event warmup:

Didn't warm up...not really. Did stretch. Didn't have time to get in the water before race. I stretched for about 10 -15 minutes. stood around and made jokes with friends. good times.

Comments:

Start wasn't good...never is. I was fine being in the MOP - I tried to get out ahead and began with a faster pace/less breathing - but, wasn't able to move as I wanted to. Felt like everyone took off ahead of me. But - I kept steady and got into my rythm. I didn't feel really good until perhaps 1/2 into it. By the end I felt great and I was picking up my speed more and more. Felt good coming out of the water. Navigation was surprisingly good. I was steadily passing people (not a lot..but some) and passed some blue caps (wave before mine) and then even some yellow (?) - 2 waves before.
What would you do differently?:

Try to draft...I think I can pick up my pace and be fine. Need to work on breathing - still taking a breath every other stroke, which needs to stop.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

It's all a blur...I wanted to make sure I was running out of the water and not winded, etc. Which I was able to do - although the steps on the way up were a bit wet. I wasn't booking...but I was going. Got the goggles up, and waited till I was at the top of the stairs to take off my wetsuit top. At T1 decided to put gloves on and sox. liked having my bike hanging by the seat rather than by the handlebars. I don't know what took so much time. I had trouble with my helmet - and had to move it around (even though I had it set up correctly)
What would you do differently?:

So running to/from T1 was good. Taking off wetsuit was ok as far as I can remember. But - it was all the bike stuff that took forever. i didn't wipe my feet - but I don't think it impacted me at all. I don't know what...i'll have to think about it.

Comments:

need to get more comfortable with drinking on the bike and figure out pacing for myself. when i get tired i begin to lose balance - need to work on that. once in a while i get cranking and I know that I'm pedaling correctly - heels down - full turns, etc. and it feels right but i just can't keep it up. I need to focus on the pedaling more.
What would you do differently?:

drink more. bring a gel.
Transition 2
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

am i supposed to be running with shoes on, helmet off? umm...so when i got off the bike (a bit too early i think) Raquel was commenting on my handlebars and I was joking back with her. then she harassed me (taking pictures of my butt) while I was in transition. I couldn't concentrate and i was sorta distracted bc i was laughing! But...i WAS having a good time.
What would you do differently?:

Not let Raquel go to the race! hahaha just kidding. having her cheer was great. but (per raquel) I should grab my hat and the number and put it on WHILE i'm running. Dote! Duh! Makes sense.
Run
  • 1h 03m 22s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

As suspected...I had so much trouble with the run. I walked at every water stop. i drank at every water stop (which i think was good considering how hot it was) and i poured water over my head towards the end. I just broke it down and tried to run between water stops...1 mile at a time. I kept my pace very slow and tried to keep my feet low to the ground to conserve what little energy i had left. my legs were just exhausted. that's all. calves were ok. felt it in the thighs a little. I ended up being able to spring towards the end. I picked up my pace at mile 6 and then put out everything i had left in the last 20 yds. strange...on mile 3 & 4 i felt better than on mile 1 & 2 (well...but the first time i walked was after mile 2...so that could have something to do with it). I'd get little bursts and pick up my pace on hills or something (which probably wasn't smart)
What would you do differently?:

train more for the run
Post race
Warm down:

let's see...that consisted of drinking lots o water - walking over to the gang. hanging out and talking. going to TA to get my recovery drink - shoving my face with oranges. then stretching a bit while cheering and yapping.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hot/humid...but - really i just need to train better and stick to my right pace

Event comments:

Hey...I met my goals. 1.) finish under 3 hours 2.) 10 min miles for running 3.) drinking on bike and not in TA area. The only goal i didn't meet was not walking during the run. But 3 out of 4 ain't bad for my first international.

Course: rolling hills. although towards the end...i dreaded even the slightest incline. got into the big ring for about the first 1/2 - but went back down later. not sure if it damages me because it potentially wears out my legs. i felt very good in the beginning. strong even. but - i think i was going too fast and i quickly had my pace go down to something more manageable for me. Glutes were hurting towards the end (not in a bad way..i was just aware of them). Right hand hurt a little, lower back soreness, and my left shoulder began acting up a little - but not anything bad like it used to be. I was tired towards the end. my legs were caput...no bonking. i drank, but i don't think i drank enough on the bike. only about 3/4 of heed & 1/3 water. No gel...i forgot the gel at T1. there were 2 stretches that had a lot of patches, etc. on it and were crazy to go over. oh...and i sort of got lost towards the end - to the point where i stopped the bike and i was trying to figure out my direction (STUPID ME). Also - towards the end I was coasting sometimes too. I think i take too long when I'm drinking...but, hey, at least i'm drinking.
