Pre-race routine:

Light snack to start. Road out to the race with Mark. Got set up. Went for a short run. Then had half a Powerbar and headed down to the swim.
Swim
  • 19m 53s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

800M; 19:53; 22/34. Well, I'd characterize the swim as good news bad news. Always my most challenging portion of the race, I actually felt pretty good throughout the swim. That's the good news. I felt like I was swimming well - a couple times I noticed I was releasing my lead arm too early but other than that felt good - and I felt like I was in the pack, staying close with other swimmers the whole way. So close in fact that about 200M into the swim I got hit in the right eye by a rather large guy while I was trying to squeeze between him and another swimmer on my left. But I'm a little disappointed with my time and my place. That's the bad news. I felt like I swam pretty well - probably as best as I can - and still finished pretty far back in the pack. I'll continue to work on this and see if I can't add more efficiency to my stroke.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. Probably focus more on streamline position. I think I allowed my head to be a little high in the water. Like I said, I felt - at the time - like I was swimming about as well as I can.
Transition 1
  • 05m 2s
Comments:

A short run up to T1 and then on the bike. Looking at the other times, it appears I did ok here - 17/22. Felt pretty good running up to T1. Didn't tie my shoes after getting out of the water, which maybe saved a couple seconds. Got out of T1 as fast as possible.
Bike
  • 47m 29s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.22 mile/hr
Comments:

16 miles; 47:29; 20.2mph; 15/32. Right where I wanted to be in terms of mph. Felt good on the bike. Worked hard. Lost momentum a couple times going to eat or drink. Need to practice this and learn how to keep speed up while eating/drinking. Could probably shave a minute or two off of time.
What would you do differently?:

Work on taking drink/gel while riding. I always have to stop pedaling and I lose momentum. This is a good thing for me to work on leading up to my next race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Too long. Need to work on my T2 times. All but three other racers were in and out of T2 faster than me. The average T2 times was 1:17 - I was 1:50. It's only 43 seconds, but still, I'd like to pick it up a little if I can.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure how to get faster. Probably bike shoes off before getting into transition. That's something else I can work on. Getting socks on takes time, but I have to wear socks. Maybe try some different socks and see if they slip on easier. Switch to zip style laces on running shoes.
Run
  • 39m
  • 4.4 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

4.4 miles; 39:00; 8:52 pace; 24/34. Right at my target pace of 8:50/mile. Good run - tough at times. But I feel good about my pace - fastest pace yet over a distance greater than 5k. I think I can get faster - and should target this pace for my 10k. Will work on speed, but most importantly, the mental aspect. When I get tired, I start to count the minutes/miles to finish, which works against me. Need to focus on being strong throughout the run.

What would you do differently?:

Going to work on run speed. I went back and looked at three guys who were all behind me after the swim, but all finished ahead of me. I was :45 behind one, and slightly ahead of the other two after the bike. By the end of the run, I was 3:05 behind the slowest, and 3:48 behind the fastest. They all turned in run times around 8:00/mile.
Post race
Warm down:

It was raining so I probably didn't get a proper warm-down. Had some snacks and then we hustled off to brunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure exactly. I actually finished right at my goal time. My swim was a bit slower than expected and my bike a bit faster and my run right on. I guess looking at the overall numbers, my main limiter was running. That's what I believe I can measurably improve.

Event comments:

Overall, pretty happy with performance in this race. Making improvements in bike and run times. Can still get a little better. Need to continue to work on swim. I think my strategy has to be to be a faster biker/runner. Not sure I'll ever be a fast swimmer - I can be an efficient swimmer, but not sure I'll ever be fast.
