Pre-race routine:

The usual. Up at 4am. Ate breakfast. Drove the short distance to the race site. I arrived about 0530 and was one of the first athletes to arrive. Got a nice outside rack spot.
Event warmup:

Surveyed the transition area. Ran the route from the swim exit to T1. This was a long, curvy run. Then swam about 500 m. Warmup was pretty much futile. I had to stand around for a half hour - I was in the last Oly wave.
Swim
  • 30m 11s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 01s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started in the last wave. This was a 2 loop course, so I knew that by the second loop the course would become very crowded. And it was; mostly at the bouy turns. Overall an uneventful swim and an OK swim.
What would you do differently?:

Some day I'm going to swim in a race and not worry about speed. Just focus on form and stroke. I bet then I'll swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Long run from the swim exit, down a steep grassy hill, through a group of tennis courts to T1. Got my bike quickly and ran to the mount line. Headed out with my feet on top of my shoes. I tried to get the first foot in the shoe, looked down, and ran into the curb. The road curved. Doh! Luckily I feel into a thick pile of ivy that cushioned my landing. Nothing hurt except my pride. After that I was a bit flustered and it took me forever to get my feet into the shoes. The first part of the course was up a small rise and I had trouble maintain speed.
What would you do differently?:

Recon transition better and then decide on whether or not it makes sense to keep the shoes on the bike. In this case, with the incline and curves in the road, maybe putting my shoes on in T1 would have been faster.

Comments:

After finally getting into my shoes, which seemed to take forever, I headed out slightly uphill and into a headwind. The course wasn't too crowded...yet. I liked this loop course. On one side we had headwinds and uphill. On the other we had tail wind and down hill. The tailwind and downhill was fun - 30+mph. By the third loop the sprint distance athletes we coming onto the course. Then it became very crowded. I just used the legal draft to continual pass the slower riders.

I kept my HR at LTHR ~161. By the last loop I was in z4a.

Overall a good ride.
What would you do differently?:

Get into my shoes faster.

Comments:

This was a very good run for me. My plan was to push the run hard and keep my HR at LTHR and a pace ~7:40'/mile. My LTHR is 171 so I finished right at LT.

This course has lots of short steep hills that just spiked my HR. But it was a fun run. The first three miles went by quickly. I saw Aaron at about mile 2, he was on the way into the finish. At the 3 mile turn around I saw 2 guys that looked like they were in my AG. So I turned and looked at their calfs. One of them was in my AG. So I had my mark. I was going to catch him. He was about a 1/4 mile ahead and I had 3 miles to catch him. After the turn around I was passed by a guy in my AG. This was a big bummer for me. I tried to stay on his heels, but he was just too fast. But I still had my mark. At about mile 5 I passed him and made that pass quick and didn't let up. I didn't want him on my heels. My mile 5 split was 6:12. There is no way I ran that fast. The mile marker must have been in the wrong place judging by my mile 5 & 6 splits.

I'm glad I passed that guy, because that put me into third place in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bad T1. Need more OW swimming practice.

Event comments:

Playtri puts on a well run race. Lots of volunteers and aid stations on the course.
