Swim
Comments: Based on past swims and training, I thought I could pull off this swim in about 17 minutes, so I went to the very front next to the right hand buoy hoping to draft off some of the faster swimmers. I was in the first wave, and when the horn sounded, I got completely run over, I mean pummeled. I gulped a huge amount of water and dry heaved a couple of times. When I finally started swimming, I never felt like I got into any kind of rhythm so it was a rough swim for me. What would you do differently?: Lesson learned, don't go to the front and try and hang with them out of the gate. For me it's better to be in the middle back and pass people. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went pretty good, wetsuit strippers got my wetsuit off quick and I got into my bike gear pretty fast. What would you do differently?: Could have moved faster. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't forget anything. Bike
Comments: Bike went well. Out of transition I started to pass people on a regular basis. Course is pretty tight with a lot of turns so I didn't ride as aggressive as I should have. I also saw 3 crashes on the course, so I think that made me ride a little cautious...probably a good thing. Bike computer showed a touch over 30 miles so more than the latest course info of 27.5...For report went with the 29.2 shown on the results page. What would you do differently?: There was several times when I should have passed some slower riders quicker, but I ended up waiting for a couple minutes because of turns coming up. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went good. Running shoes on grabbed the visor and headed out. What would you do differently?: Only thing I can think of that would make it faster would be to leave my bike shoes clipped in at the dismount line...Never tried it, I guess I'll have to practice that one. Run
Comments: Run went really well for me. I was hoping to be around 8-8:15 per mile and being that I bettered that I was extremely happy. First race with the newton shoes and they seemed to do OK. I'm almost convinced that they are better for training and my regular shoes are better for racing. What would you do differently?: Not sure. I felt like I pushed it just the right amount. It was hot out there, and I felt like I did a good job keeping myself cool. Post race
Warm down: Finished up grabbed a water and found my wife and ABQKid's wife to cheer him on in the half. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not sure. Going into the race I thought I could do a 2:30 if everything went just right. With the bad swim and the longer bike course that wouldn't happen. Overall I'm very happy with my race and I was really happy with my run. Event comments: RedRock usually does a great job. This year for some reason they seemed to have a really hard time nailing down the course. I really like SOMA, both the half and now Quarterman...It's a great season ender for me. Drove down to Tempe on Friday with ABQkid and our wives.
Got up at 4:30 ate a bagel PB&J drank some gatorade and ABQKid and I headed to transition. Setup transition found my wife and had her help me with my wetsuit and I got in the water to wait for the horn.
