Swim
Comments: I was in the second wave and started in the back of the wave. It was a wade off a boat ramp. I started out well and got into a nice pace. I could tell I was getting hot in a full wetsuit, I should have gotten a sleeveless wetsuit. I was swimming a nice straight line but couldn't find anyone to draft. I made it to the turn around and it was empty. Kind of surprising. On the way back, I ran into this guy who would flail real fast for a 100 yards and then breaststroke. I would pass him and then he would pass me back. It got annoying after a while. Overall the swim went well. Beat last year and felt strong coming out of the water. What would you do differently?: Wear a sleeveless wetsuit Transition 1
Comments: It went pretty well. I had some problems finding the pull for my wetsuit. I had a good spot and was out quick What would you do differently?: Get the suit off a little faster Bike
Comments: My worst event is usually the bike but things went pretty well. This was the closest I've come to averaging 20 mph. I could tell on the hills that I haven't been training a lot. It was the usual race with a lot of people passing me and playing tag with a few people. I did manage to stay aero on the big downhill. I could tell that all my training was geared for distance and not speed. I didn't have the pick up that would have been nice when coming out of corners but I could have gone all day. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder on the uphills Transition 2
Comments: This went pretty well. Not much to it. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: This is usually my best event but up to a few days before the race, I wasn't sure that I would be able to run. I was surprised at the start that I felt pretty good running but that only lasted for a mile or so. After that I had a hard time with any hill. My calf would tighten up and I could tell I hadn't run in the last month. I pushed harder where I could but it was unusual to get passed that much on a tri run. This was the only part of the race where I was slower from last year. It was cool to finish in the high school stadium. What would you do differently?: Not get hurt. This was the second year in a row I went into this race having just recovered. Post race
Warm down: I grabbed the towel and water bottle they had at finish. I like having the cold towel at the end. I walked around, found the wife and got something to eat. I think the after race part is the thing I like best about this race. I get to see a lot of people I know and talk about tri's. What limited your ability to perform faster: A bad leg Event comments: I like this race. It's local, very organized and I know the course. They've been doing this race for over 20 years so they know what they are doing. They also give out the best swag. This year it was a running jacket, socks and a hat. BT was well represented at the race. Docswim was 13th overall and 3rd out of the water. Damn he's fast. Last updated: 2007-09-02 12:00 AM

I went to the check in on Saturday to pick up my race pack. I only missed the Clydesdale category by 55 lbs. So, I asked if the had Shelton Pony category, for those under 5'8" and 150 lbs. They said no. I decided to have my own contest and awarded my self first place. It was a stunning achievement. :) I then went to get my bag of stuff and the woman handing out the bags asked "Do you think you'll finish the swim?" Well, I'm wearing my IM shirt and feeling pretty full of myself. I told her I thought I could handle it but damn, I must have looked pretty bad to get that question.
The night before the race went to Paul's house for dinner. I don't know what he gave us but I was pretty regular the next morning. I slept through to the alarm and rolled out of bed. It was nice having only a 10 minute drive to the race start. Had breakfast and drove to the race. This race has two separate transitions. I set up T2 and then rode my bike to the lake and set up T1. I got two good spots.
The ride down to the lake was the warmup. I spent the rest of the time talking to people. I knew several people from work, a couple of BTers and I met a new BTer, DocSwim. This was my third time doing this race and I train on the course, so I knew it well. I waited to the last minute to put my wetsuit on as it was hot out. I don't know how this race was wetsuit legal. They said the water was 77 but I don't believe it.
I wasn't expecting a lot for this race. I haven't done much training since July and my calf had been hurting. I think I had run 10 miles in the 3 weeks before the race.
