Pre-race routine:

My first Triathlon at age 45...can't believe it is really here.

Woke up at 4:00, had a cup of coffee, loaded bike up in truck with my gear and headed out at 5:15 to the race. Tried to keep it as simple as possible for my first race.
Event warmup:

Racked my bike, laid out towel and gear, talked to my buddy who was doing his first race. We walked the transition to get a feel of the bike and run exit. Talked to alot of people racking their bike nearby and realized how friendly everyone was. So much excitement about doing the race.

Felt strangley calm before the swim. I was a little nervous about the wetsuit because this was going to be my first swim in a wetsuit. I had wanted to get some practice with the wetsuit but I had no time. I got to the water a little early and warmed up with a little out and back swim to get the feel of the suit. My nervousness went away immediately...the suit felt great!
What would you do differently?:

Practice more open water swimming with the wetsuit. I had only done 2 open water swims before this race, all the rest of my training in the pool.

Transition seemed good after nice little run from ocean up the beach to transition area. Took my time and on my way for the bike portion.
What would you do differently?:

Practice coming out of ocean and running quarter mile to a transition area through soft sand.

Enjoyed the bike portion alot. Gotpassed and passed some people. Tried to keep a good steady pace.
What would you do differently?:

Practice hills. Just ride more. Work on being able to hydrate during ride.

Transition seemed smooth, like before, just took my time and off o the run I went.
What would you do differently?:

Take shoes off at transition beginning and run barefoot to rack bike and get ready for run. Was not used to running in my bike shoes and was slow and careful.

Felt sluggish for the first half of the run. I hate to admit it, but I walked a short 25 yd portion in the middle. No walking next time.
What would you do differently?:

Get my Right foot problem fixed and just run more!!!!!

Warm down:

Drank water, found my friend and went to finish area to cheer on finishers. Great time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience. Overall I was happy with my performance. I was shooting for a 1:20 finish and I finished 1:18:31. The average finish for this triathlon was 1:27:47 so I was very happy with my time.

What a fun time and I am hooked on triathlon.

I really wish I would have started Triathlon 20 years ago.
