Run
Comments: 6:41 pace. Since this was my first du, I had no idea how hard to go on 1st run. I figured I could go fairly hard. I found a gal to pace with and kept up with her until she pulled away at the end. My last 5K race was 6:32 pace which I think is my PR, so this was pretty fast. What would you do differently?: My legs felt pretty good on the bike although I expected my pace to be a little better on the bike. I had done training rides on the course and finished just under 20 mph. Not sure if the run affected the bike enough to be under my 20 mph goal or whay I was a little off my goal pace. Transition 1
Comments: 2nd in AG. I had a little trouble getting into my shoes, mainly due to lack of recent practice and the fact that I did not properly open my shoes after my warmup ride. A little hard running on the gravel in the TA but I did get a spot on the proper side of the TA to minimize. What would you do differently?: Need to remember to make sure my strap is open and caught on the indent properly. Bike
Comments: I had hoped to get over 20 mph. Race results have my speed at 19.6, race report calculated at basically 20 mph. If course was 19 miles then I did get to 20 mph. What would you do differently?: I had practiced some getting into smallest ring (I have 3) on the front in anticiaption of big hills like Genoa. It definitly helped on the uphill in practice. However, I had troubles getting out of the small ring, my chain would fall off. So for the race I decided to skip the small ring. I climbed out of the saddle some in the last third of the steepest part of the hill. During practice I could stay in saddle in smallest ring. Not sure how this affected the rest of the ride. Transition 2
Comments: 2nd in AG. I started to go onto bike trail before people reminded me I had to go farther down and go into the driveway. Gravel was a little tough on bare feet. My shoes had been pushed over some but no problem finding them. What would you do differently?: Not much Run
Comments: 7:03 pace. I felt pretty good coming off of bike, didn't take too long to get into a running stride. I got passed by my eventual AG winner pretty early but knew I couldn't keep up with him at that point. Results show I was 5 seconds behind my 2nd place AG finisher but neither Barb or I remember anyone that close in front of me. If so I would have definitely tried to close the gap. My combined run pace would be 6:52 for a 10K, so that is good with the bike in the middle. What would you do differently?: I always think I could a little harder at the end and try not leave anything on the course. Much easier when people are finishing with you at a bigger race. Post race
Warm down: Drink, drink, drink. Since I placed we stayed for awards, then Barb took a group picture of the TriRochester members present. Had to get going to get cleaned up for Dan Kennedy's wedding in the Cities. Was good to meet some BTers, Bill Nevala and talk to Todd Stockmo, Pascoes, Johnsons, etc. What limited your ability to perform faster: Happy with my run times, would still like to get bike times faster. I think I need to adjust my training on the bike. I need to use HRM and push myself harder, intervals, etc. Event comments: Good to race close to home for a change. A du is different than a tri, it fit well in my schedule at the end of the year when my swim training has decreased. As this was my first, I would definitely do more. Honey Nut Cheerios and a banana for breakfast about 6:45. We had to drop off the dog at the kennel on the way to Douglas. Got to Douglas just before 8am for 9am start.
Road a little, ran a little. Met some BTers, Bryan (MNDIVER) and Joe (JOER) and briefly Patty (ROWDYPAINT). Also met some of the members in TriRochester club, I had not met before.
