Swim
Comments: Quick run and dive into the ocean, swam fast and turned the first bouy, but that is when the log jam started! We were all on top of each other, and it was ugly. It thinned out somewhat after about another 200 yards, but I was well out of my rythm by then, and had swallowed a good bit of salt water. Tough to keep a good stroke with all of the contact, but I did my best to keep my composure. Swim times for this race are misleading due to the long run from the ocean's edge up the beach - onto a sandy path - and then atleast a quarter mile run on hard top to transition all included in swim time. What would you do differently?: If I was a faster swimmer, I'd be leading the pack instead of getting caught in the log jam! Will work on swim speed during the winter months. I am very confident in the water with distances, but I need to get faster now. Transition 1
Comments: I was through T1 quickly. What would you do differently?: I had forgotten to open strap on bike shoes to allow me to slip into shoes while pedaling out of T1. But that didn't matter too much. Next time, open straps! Bike
Comments: I felt real good on the bike, and I passed a lot of people out there. By far my fastest bike on this course in my third attempt. Transition 2
Comments: Cruised through T2! Run
Comments: This is the second week in a row that I am disapointed in my run time. But unlike last week where I felt fatigued, I felt great on this 5K. I thought I was doing a 7:00 to 7:15 minute mile, but they had me at 7:28 average. That is not good enough! I went hard, but the times tell me I left too much out there on the run and that is not good! The last 150 yards of the run is across a field, and I booked across that at nearly a sprint with lots of fan support! What would you do differently?: Push it more! Post race
Warm down: Took a minute to chill out with water, and then stretched and did a short cool down jog. Took in the race and the beautiful day. Cheered on a bunch of other people. Loaded up our bikes and stuck around for awards and raffles. Fiance won first in her age group which was cool, but we had to sit through a good hour of Duathlon awards and raffles to get to her award presentation.... Then we headed out for some grub and the 2+ hour ride back to PA. What limited your ability to perform faster: I don't track my speed / output / HR in a race other than the bike portion, and today that hurt me since I thought I was running much faster than I really was. I just go by feel and push when I can, but today I must not have pushed enough. Should have run closer to 7 minutes miles! Event comments: I was down on Piranha-Sports after several mediocre races over the past three years, but this one was well done. Beautiful venue at Cape Henlopen State Park. We stayed in a local hotel the night before. Had a great night sleep considering we were only a few miles from race site. Got up at 5:45. Did my PBJ / banana breakfast washed down with orange Vitamin Water. Checked the bikes again, and loaded up the truck. Were over at race site by 6:20. Transition spots marked, but I liked my spot in center isle about midway down.
Light jogging and stretching about 40 minutes before swim start.
