Pre-race routine:

Bright eyed and bushy-tailed (for a change!) at 4:50. Took my time getting my bottles ready, eating a bagle and banana, and drinking my coffee before my friend arrived at 5:30. Sipped on some Propel on the drive there.
Event warmup:

When we got there it still seemed there was some confusion over whether the race had been postponed until 7:20, so I was too nervous to get out of earshot of the announcer and do my run warm-up. I just jogged around the parking lot and transition area once and that was it. They also were not letting people in the lake to warm up due to "conditions". huh? I really hated to start a sprint completely cold, but into the swim chute ...
Swim
  • 09m 1s
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a great start. The running in seemed very sudden and I was a little shocked by the number of people in the water around me and the conditions of the lake (black, choppy, and TONS of seaweed). I tried to find some faster swimmers to draft off, but no luck. I liked the course and navigated the buoys very well. I was elated to see the beach approach so quickly ...
What would you do differently?:

Gone down to the swim start beforehand and gone through the course in my mind in lieu of warmup. I would have pushed a little harder, too, especially knowing how short the course felt when I finished.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Pretty smooth, except for hang-up with my new sunglasses. First time racing with them and when I picked them up they were completely fogged over! Ahh! Since they don't fold, I couldn't stick hang them on the outside of my shirt. I wasted maybe 5-10 seconds thinking about what I should do before figuring something out and taking off. The run out of transition with my bike seemed like it took FOREVER. (and looking at my time - it did!)
What would you do differently?:

Foggy glasses strategy.
Bike
  • 37m 13s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 21.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Horrible start - Profile aero bottle was not secured with the velcro and was falling out! I wasted at least two minutes trying to string the loop through (which I can barely do while standing BESIDE the bike) and had no luck. I was getting passed by tons of people. ARRGHH! I would have totally just pitched the bottle if I didn't need what was in it! I finally figured something out and started hammering. Had a good ride and was fortunate to have a few fast ladies push me in the last 1/3. Was surprised how many fast women I had never seen before were out there. Had lots of chances on this course to practice turning and cornering, which are NOT my strong suit!
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my bottle is secured BEFORE I start! I lost some key time there and my average reflected it. :-( I should have pushed harder, too.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

This was a smooth transition. Until I can figure out how to get out of my shoes before I dismount (no time soon!), this is as good as it gets for me. ;-) That was a loonnnnng run with bike shoes on though!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 22m 40s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

The women who were near me on the bike got ahead of me coming out of the transition and I had to let them go while I found my rhythm. Got into a nice rhythm after about 1/2 mile and caught two of them, the third was in my AG and as much as I wanted to turn it up (I could see her!) I stayed within my limits. Surprised to see that I was really hauling butt when I checked my time at Mile 2, and just hoped I could hold on. I planned to turn it up a gear with about .6 to go, but when it came I found I was already in my highest gear. (good for me!) Took in a little gel, which maybe gave me just a psychological boost if anything, but enough to get me to the finish. Really stayed focused through the whole run today. PR'd by 37 seconds!
What would you do differently?:

Gotten a little more gel down, but other than that, nothing. No doubts that this was my best effort today. :-D
Post race
Warm down:

Staggering and gasping for a couple minutes :-p and then walking it off and drinking water. Stretched for a few minutes, then walked around chatting with people and looking for my friend.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Preventable equipment issues on bike.

Event comments:

These organizers seemed to love putting on this race, and that made it fun. The course was fun(except the lake water!), the transition area was very well-organized, the post-race food was good (Startbucks iced coffed was awesome), and the goody bag was great! Nice job Tri-PTC!
