Lake Geneva Triathlon Series

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 34m 7s
Overall Rank = 133/436
Age Group = M3539
Age Group Rank = 19/47
Pre-race routine:

Got up ridiculously early. Literally just lying in bed and my calf muscle started to tighten up, as it probably anticipated the hills to come. Choked down a bagel with some peanut butter, drove hour to race with friend.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little but probably not enough. Hydrated plenty and visited many port-a-potties.
Swim
  • 07m 58s
  • 820 yards
  • 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

There was no way that was a half-mile. I can see swim courses being a little off, but that was a little more than a quarter mile. I swam it OK, and started to speed up the strokes when I realized it was so short.
What would you do differently?:

I could have rounded the bouys better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

I really need new bike shoes. I have old shoes with laces and they took forever to tie. It was tough to run in the sand with the bike. I didn't have much problem getting on my bike jersey though.
What would you do differently?:

Get new shoes. Learn to race without socks.
Bike
  • 55m 30s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.38 mile/hr
Comments:

I need a better engine on the bike. I am just not as good as I could be on it. I kept my HR between 160 and 170, which was pushing it for me, and I still was not passing many people on road bikes. I also have to slow down too much when drinking or getting gel. I was able to get enough fluid.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

I didn't get off the bike very well, and couldn't run in the sand much. I forgot my race belt, but had my bib on my bike jersey anyway. I could do better, but not too much.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe get a better transition spot.
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

My plan was to attack the hills and coast going down, which would have been sound had I trained for the hills better. I had to walk at the top for about 100 yards, but caught my breath and ran well the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not attack quite so hard or train for hills better.
Post race
Warm down:

Looked for friend, got food and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train better on the bike.

Event comments:

It was a good race for me, considering my level of training and ability. I did well on the swim and run, and did not expect much on the bike.

It was somewhat typical for a Lake Geneva race with some strange things such as the short swim, but I have to say it is a beautiful town and a challenging course. My expectations were not that high because of past complaints about Lake Geneva, and they were exceeded. The races started close to on time and the bike course was well marked. I enjoyed it.
