Pre-race routine:

Went up night before and had my night before dinner of chicken and whole wheat pasta. Got to sleep around midnight and was up at 5:30...I got to sleep in! Had my usual 2 packets of oatmeal and banana. Was first to check in at race and found a sweet spot in the transition and set up.
Event warmup:

My bike was covered in sand, so I took it to clean off and a quick spin to make sure everything was cleared out. I got on it too soon and found myself in some sand and subsequently on my side...whoops! I almost got into a fist fight when I got back. Some couple decided to take my spot on the rack while I was warming up. I politely asked them to make room for my bike and was told there was more room down the rack. I stood there completely shocked...what a-holes!!! So finally the husband said, oh, I guess thats your stuff (pointing to my bags and shoes and towel and bucket!) and decided he could spare 6 inches for my bike...yeah, thanks you dill-hole!

Comments:

You know it's going to be bad when they encourage the weaker and newer swimmers to pull from the race because the waves are so bad. I guess the storm the night before brought in the devil, cuz it really was bad imo. I'm an extremely strong swimmer, so I thought I could use the crap to my advantage...boy was I SO wrong!! I stood at the start and the waves were knocking me back and I got PISSED. And when I get mad, I get good...bring it on mother nature, I'll put a hurtin on you. Well, like I said, WRONG. The first 200 was a fight not to drown. Every breath I tried to take, I took water in instead. So I was a bit panicky. I remained calm, only to feel my chip falling off. I reached back to grab it and got slammed by a wave...wonderful. I shoved it down my wetsuit which caused my breathing to be more constricted. Once I was parallel to the waves, I was able to calm even more and focus on my stroke...kinda. I thought coming back in the waves would help me, but I was just slammed around some more. Every time I tried to sight, I was below a wave and couldn't see where I was. This was terrible.
What would you do differently?:

Everything. I would have pulled harder, remained more calm, remembered to sight when I wasn't fighting the waves, breathed better. Honestly, it was a shit show...a foght to just get it donw. As strong and confident I am in the water, I was legit scared for my life. I've never swam through waves like that and it scared me. I heard many people turned back and a few were plucked from the water.
Transition 1

Comments:

The run in from the beach was brutal. I lost my chip again and some nice lad grabbed it in the water and handed it to me. WHEW! I was almost to the timing pad when I felt my stomach turn and and leaned over and dry heaved big time. I think it was from fighting so hard in the water and the toll it took on my mental state...I was whooped. Everything else went great. I couldn't get all the sand off my feet, but owell. It was only 13 miles on bike, a little sand wouldn't kill me. Carrried my bike outta transition so no more sand got into gears.
What would you do differently?:

Not get sick, maybe run faster...but I had to walk cuz of tummy :(
Bike
  • 39m 45s

Comments:

The first few miles I took it kinda easy, due to my tummy issues. Once that was settled, I got into my zone. I only got passed by maybe 3 chicks and a dozen dudes on some serious machinery. I had to keep telling myself to race my race. My plan was to stick to 19 mph. I kept wanteing to push it harder, but I'm just getting confident in my run and didn't want to fry my legs. Towards the end of the race, I saw a squirrel outta the corner of my eye. He was coming across the road and wasn't about to stop...and neither was I. The little bugger hit my front tire, went through the spokes, and popped out the other side. I screamed cuz I thought I might crash, but neither the squirell or myself skipped a beat. Laughter enused for a good 30 sec after that.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I actually finished a few minutes faster then I had planned, so I was very happy with my bike.

Comments:

Very easy. I felt like I was moving VERY slow, but I think I did ok. Everything came off and went on just fine.

Comments:

The first mile went quick since there was a few turn arounds and different surfaces to run on. We went by the finish and then out to the long loop. I felt really good, better then I have running before. Once I hot the halfway mark, I really upped my cadence. My goal was to run and avg 8:30/mile with a neg split. I also wanted to push myself so that when the finish came, I had no steam left to sprint. And thats exactly what I did, but I think I ran faster then I had planned.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, my run felt great!
Post race
Warm down:

Nada. I ate some food, drank in some liquids, and hung out with the family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim was totally brutal. It was the only thing that really hurt my performance today.

Event comments:

I really liked this race. The volunteers were great and the atmosphere was very supportive. I had hoped to place, and based off of last years times, I could have. I even had a faster race then I had planned to. Unfortunatly, once again, it seemed my AG was very compettive. So I'm unhappy I didn't place, but VERY happy my bike and run improved so much.

ps...just got my splits. This was an insanely competitive field. I got 8th out of 12 in my AG and I ran a pretty good race. Again, still bummed I didn't place, but man, I could not have done that race much different.
