Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45am and threw stuff in car. Stopped and got a small cup of coffee for the 2-hour drive. Ate PB on an english muffin around 6:15, then a Pria bar around 6:45, and drank lots of water. Got to the race site and picked up our packets, then kinda hung around and got ourselves ready to race (Travis was running the 1/2 marathon). Ate a banana around 8:00, then 3 shot bloks and some water at 8:30 and wandered toward the starting line.
Event warmup:

Not much - just some walking around and a little stretching. Watched Travis and the other 1/2 marathoners and marathoners go off.

Comments:

Started out toward the back third of the pack, so it was a little slow going at first. Realized a few minutes in that I was taking it TOO easy and picked up the pace a bit. Hit the first mile at 8:48 and the turn-around at 12:37ish, then picked up the pace again. Started passing quite a few people and felt really good, so with approximately a half mile to go I picked up the pace again and picked off a few more people. Made the turn back into the park, with the finish line about 200 yards or so away and stretched my legs. Felt great! No hip/ITB pain during the race or after - yes!
What would you do differently?:

Probably pace a little better at the start of the race. Other than that, not much.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and walked around. Wandered over to look at the official results and realized I may have placed in my AG so I hung around for the awards, where I learned I placed 5th (1st-3rd got trophies, 4th & 5th got medals) but my medal hadn't come in yet (huh?) so they have to send it to me. Wasn't expecting to place high enough for any hardware at all, so that was a bonus!

Then I walked back to the finish line in time to see Travis finish the 1/2 marathon (his first) in 2:04:14!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Enh, not much - need to do some speedwork.

Event comments:

Beautiful weather for a race! Nice course. Only complaint was that they used chips for timing, but didn't have a timing mat at the start (based everyone's start time on the gun time). So my actual time was probably a few seconds faster. Oh well! Still a 2007 5K PR for me, and only 14 seconds slower than my best 5K last year!
