Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

I did not arrive with enough time to warm up. By the time they were calling for the contestants to the beach, I still did not have my wetsuit on. I was running around like a chicken with his head cut off just trying to get my transition set up.
Event warmup:

Running to the bathroom, and running to the truck to get the gels that I forgot.
Swim
  • 17m 41s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

I think the weeds really through me off although I did swim faster than my 2 open water practice swims at home.
What would you do differently?:

Swim closer to the front of the pack, and try to stay closer to the buoys.
Transition 1
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

T1 was way too long. I think I could have saved some time with a little more effort in the transition. Although this is easy to say sitting in front of a computer instead of 40 degree weather after swimming a half mile.
What would you do differently?:

Try to go faster. By my next race I will have new running shoes fully equipped with YANKZ! The yankz were obviously the difference since willie05 had them! Just kidding.
Bike
  • 41m 1s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.18 mile/hr
Comments:

I made my own custom aero bars for this race. I was at about the 8 mile mark when my left aero bar broke off at the weld. Apparently I need more practice welding aluminum! The busted aero bar broke my concentration for about 1.5 miles. Other than that I was really cold.
What would you do differently?:

Test my aero bars before the race. Get a pair of tri shorts.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

I do not have cycling shoes, therefore this transition is easy. I did have to dig in my bag to find my camera for my wife since she got lost and arrived at the race late.
What would you do differently?:

Send my camera with my wife.
Run
  • 23m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run time for me. My goal was 8 minute miles and I beat my goal so overall very good.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Got water and ate some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Preparation at the beginning of the day.

Event comments:

I thought the race was well prepared and organized. My only complaint was that the HFP racing website titled this event as a "festival". I brought my family and friends thinking there would be something for them to do besides watch me race. There was no food, games, or any activities at all for the spectators. I left within an hour of finishing the race because of the lack of festivities.
