Swim
Comments: Damn cold water. Took my breath away. Had to remind myself to breathe. Never felt warmed up. We were pretty packed in with people but I didn't get hit too much. What would you do differently?: nothing Transition 1
Comments: Not bad getting the wetsuit off for the first time I had worn the thing in a race. I was worried about it. This transition actually felt pretty good. Since it was cold air temp and I was wet, I opted to wear a short sleeved shirt under a long sleeved one because I thought I would be too cold on the ride. What would you do differently?: Just wear the short sleeved shirt. Turns out I got warm pretty quickly on the bike course. Bike
Comments: Oh man there were a lot of hills. they never really stopped. I could tell I had been slacking on my cycling the last couple of weeks. What would you do differently?: If I do this race again I will do a lot more hill work in the 3 weeks prior to the race. Transition 2
Comments: No major problems. Got off the bike without incident and got all my run gear. Took off long sleeved shirt. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: No real problems other than being slow. This is the first race I've done with part of the run being off road. I really liked that part despite the rocks, roots and significant hills. Slow as always. Next year I will work on speed more! What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Standing around at the end of the race. Chatting. What limited your ability to perform faster: COLD water on swim, inadequate training for the really hilly bike course. Event comments: the website for this event wasn't updated very well. Last updated: 2007-09-21 12:00 AM

Oh, man 4 am is early. Especially when you have a 2 hour drive to look forward to. I was supposed to have some other folks come with me but they waited to register until the race was full, so it was just me.
I made coffee (decaf) and started driving. I like to time my prerace meal to about 2.5-3 hours before the actual race, so I made my PB and banana on bagel and took it with me, but didn't start eating until I was almost all the way to the race.
Got to the race site and picked up my packet. There were preassigned racks so I set up my transition area and chatted with folks for a long time since the race didn't start until 9am. I debated whether or not to wear my wetsuit, and decided to wear it since the water was cold.
A little bit of jogging around in the transition area. Water was too cold to get in and swim and then stand around waiting for the race to start.
