Pre-race routine:

Had to work yesterday (on my feet) 3-11:30 p.m., home at midnight; snack, dealt with awake baby; slept past 1:00 a.m. Up twice for baby, up for good at 4:45. Ate bread, yogurt, banana, drove to Race venue (1 hour away). Set up transition near easy-to-see area (by a light pole and tree); tried to keep warm because it was so blasted COLD!
Event warmup:

What warm up? My swim heat started over an hour after the first heats started. My warmup was being a bundle of nerves. I walked around, talked to other people, and hugged the baby; that was it.
Swim
  • 11m 31s
  • 425 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

ranked 124/131 in the swim. DOGGED IT!
What would you do differently?:

Practice more. Tighten my goggles so they didn't fill with water. Remember to hit my watch to start the timer. Not start out so panicky. BREATHE. Try to relax. It all went downhill when my goggles filled up and I forgot for FOUR LAPS to start my timer!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No way to isolate T1 time because it's counted in with bike time; this is not a chip-timed course, volunteers note your number as you enter and exit T1 and T2 but do not isolate the times. I approximate 4 minutes--this is what I think it took, but I can't know for sure.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to get towel on the ground to step on to get the rocks off my feet. Otherwise I was really pleased with the whole transition. I took my time, had a couple Shot Bloks, and felt really centered when I left T1.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 4s
  • 14 miles
  • 13.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I came in 145/168 on the bike; much better than on the swim, so I made up some here. I was pleased with my performance; biking the hills in the Port has definitely helped me on this course.

Seemed to be some gusty winds and some headwinds, not constant though, but enough to be an annoyance.

"Relatively flat" my a**!
What would you do differently?:

Get a "real" bike with aerobars?? LOL! It was like racing lamborghinis with a Jeep. Mountain Bikes are sturdy but not built for speed. I would LOVE to try one of those beautiful, light-as-a-feather bikes with the fabulous aerobars, just once. I wonder what my top speed would be? On a mountain bike it's 15 mph. One other competitor expressed friendly condolences for what I was riding!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I was a little off-kilter when I tried to rack the bike and it took me a couple tries to get the seat up and over. I already had my run shoes on, so I whipped off the helmed and gloves and dropped them on my bike handlebars, swapped my long-sleeve shirt for a tank, grabbed a couple more shot bloks, and adjusted my race belt as I ran out. I was good to go. Felt great about this transition--took me fewer than 2 minutes, but again--not chip timed, no way to isolate it. It was added to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Get a good hold of the bike and a better angle to put the seat up and over. Not sure about shirt-change; definitely needed the lighter shirt and I think I did this fairly quickly. I would bring the Shot Bloks with me as they only had water on the course and I could've used one at one point. Wish I had my iPod though!
Run
  • 33m 7s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Ranked 152/168 on the run; not as good as the bike, better than the swim. Still a PR though at 11 minute mile; thought I was going so slowly that I was moving backwards! No sense of pace at all.
What would you do differently?:

Take my Shot Bloks with me next time; I could've used one. Tried to skip the two walk breaks if possible; choose a TRI without a cross-country run, LOL!
Post race
Warm down:

Stood still for family pictures; walked a bit, then sat down and stretched. Spent the day at the Fryeburg Fair with the family, walked all day. Ate 3x Pria bars, BBQ after the race, and then had a White Mocha and 2/3 of a cookie at Borders!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike, definitely; also being nervous about the swim. Next time I will over-estimate my time by 2 minutes to ensure I have plenty of time to rest if I need it. Make sure goggles were tight enough to not flood my face. More practice bricks. Evaluate food intake and find an optimal diet to improve my stamina.

Event comments:

Some of the race staff was personality-challenged. They also brought the wrong race heat list and didn't catch it till competitors pointed out the error. Not enough volunteers out on the course (but I didn't get lost despite that). Misrepresented bike segment; definitely hilly, enough to put a friend out on a DNF. Issue with bike numbers not having holes punched to anchor to bike; no explanation of raffle tickets in packets being our entry to lunch after event (so people had to go run find them in their packets later); wish it was chip timed b/c of lack of T1 and T2 data--that is a hassle! Bike in/bike out was same place, which confused me a little.

Double-loop course, ranked 145/168 on bike leg

Course: HILLY. Whoever said this was "relatively flat" should be shot. The hills nearly killed me in places, definitely injured a friend, and some of the course was so rough they had warnings out. The roads are a true hazard in some places (I was OK b/c of my mountain bike though).
