Swim
Comments: First OW swim in competition, I was relaxed. Did not freak out, although my sighting was not very good and found myself having to swim back on course a couple of times. My stroke was good and my breathing was complimentary. I did swallow some salty water but not as much during the practice on Sat. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the swim time and know what I need to do to improve. What would you do differently?: 2 things: One, more sighting drills. I definately underestimated this. Second, OW swimming - although being in NJ its pretty tough do during this time of the season. Transition 1
Comments: Way too much time...I was lacking focus when I got to T1. I was impressed with how fast I got my wetsuit off, but then slowed down in getting my helmet, TNT shirt, shoes and socks on. A quick drink and the bike came off the rack and off I went. What would you do differently?: Should have practiced transitions more, was also a bit dizzy (maybe from bending over during taking off my swetsuit). Felt great though once I was on the bike. Bike
Comments: Felt strong and glad to be on the bike after the swim. Was looking forward to really hammering the course but the headwind was too strong and made it very difficult. Im glad with the time but dont really have anything to compare it to. What would you do differently?: Aero Bars Transition 2
Comments: Went down the wrong aisle but found my spot quickly. Racked the bike, took off the shoes, helmet and gloves, put on my race belt and sneakers. Grabbed a Gu and left. I though it was a pretty good transition. But, need to work on getting it done under 2 minutes. What would you do differently?: I should have taken my shoes off on the bike. Didnt realize how close I was to the transition until I thought of doing it. Run
Comments: I was impressed with myself. I was scared I would have to walk some and I didnt, I ran it all. I thought I hydrated well, yet by the last mile I was starving! I couldnt wait to eat. My What would you do differently?: Eat a better breakfast? or Carb up more the night before? I'm going to need to consult with some folks about this. Post race
Warm down: Gatorade and a 10 minute walk. Food at the tent and of course BEER! What limited your ability to perform faster: My first Triathlon ever, so I would say experience, Sighting in the swim, headwind on the Bike. But the obvious answer is training better. I think I have a baseline now on how to fine tune my training. We'll see. Event comments: I'm so glad I chose this race as my first. I know chosing an Olympic was perhaps not the best choice, but St Anthony's was a great event and well organized/run. Which made all the difference in the world. I am a Triathlete! Got into ST. Petersburg on Thursday, day off. Spent it on the Hilton Pool. Got too much sun, slighty burned my arms. Picked up our bikes from the truck on Friday afternoon and went for a 18 mile ride. Open water swim on Staurday morning followed by a 20 minute easy run. Dropped off bike at Transition area on Saturday and went to the TNT pasta party. Went to bed around 10PM, fell asleep around 11:30?
Up at 5AM, Breakfast around 5:30 (Banana). Body marking and setup transition area around 6AM. 7AM transition area closed and walked to Spa Beach to see the pro's start. I was in the Novice group so alot of waiting til 8:50AM wave start. Mostly stretching and swimming, with some potty breaks and and a clif bar around 7:50AM. GU shot 30 minutes before the swim start.
