Swim
Comments: Holy crap! This was my first ocean swim and it did not go smooth. There were huge waves that were eating up swimmers and people were being pulled out by lifeguards all over the place. I drank at least a liter or two of sea water. The ocean was incredibly angry this morning. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Waves were horrible and buoy was drifting all over the place. Transition 1
Comments: Was disoriented after the swim and was not sure the best way to get my suit off. What would you do differently?: Plan better for getting the wetsuit off. Bike
Comments: The course was extremely windy so I kept myself in the little cog for the first half, focused on maintaining a good cadence, then turned up the pace with the wind at my back on the way back. What would you do differently?: Push it harder on the bike, I had plenty of energy and did not get it going until the second half. Transition 2
Comments: Got lost in the transition area. Was not sure where to go really. What would you do differently?: Know exactly how the transition area from the bike is laid out. Then how the run transition heads out to the course. Run
Comments: I sliced my heel up the night before, gouging two huge chunks out on my big chainring on my bike. My feet were really hurting. I race barefoot with a pair of Asics Gel DS Racers, great shoes but horrible barefoot. Lots of seams to tear your feet up. Sucked it up and made it through the run. The run is my strength and people were crumbling on the second half when faced with the enormous headwind. That is when I started making up a lot of time. What would you do differently?: Not hurt my heel the day before a race. Buy the new Zoot running shoes in March, so my feet don't get torn up. Post race
Warm down: Drank a ton of Gatorade. Celebrated at Applebees! Felt the lactic acid pool in my legs as I had to drive back to Quantico that same day. What limited your ability to perform faster: The ocean destroying most swimmers. Not pushing it hard enough on the bike. My heel bleeding all over my shoes. Event comments: Loved this race. Other than the tough course conditions, I had a total blast! Last updated: 2007-09-22 12:00 AM
